The discussion surrounding climate-change has reached a precipice, with one of the world?s most respected skeptics public conversion. This weekend, Professor Richard A. Muller publically acknowledged that his analysis of the data shows that climate change is real ? and that humans are almost entirely the cause of it.

This is an about-face from Dr. Muller?s previous skeptic stance. One might recall his vocal criticisms of the landmark 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (I.P.C.C.), which concluded that most of the global warming over the past 50 years could be attributed to humans. But, over the last three years, the UC Berkeley Physics Professor has independently verified the findings presented in the I.P.C.C. report. And, he has systematically evaluated some of the largest concerns in the climate change skeptic community. In his own words:

?Three years ago I identified problems in previous climate studies that, in my mind, threw doubt on the very existence of global warming. Last year, following an intensive research effort involving a dozen scientists, I concluded that global warming was real and that the prior estimates of the rate of warming were correct. I?m now going a step further: Humans are almost entirely the cause.?

According to Dr. Muller and his team at the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project, years of focused analysis of available data led them to stronger findings than those presented by the I.P.C.C.. In his July 28 NY Times Op-Ed, Dr. Muller states that:

?In its 2007 report, the I.P.C.C. concluded only that most of the warming of the prior 50 years could be attributed to humans. It was possible, according to the I.P.C.C. consensus statement, that the warming before 1956 could be because of changes in solar activity, and that even a substantial part of the more recent warming could be natural?

We carefully studied issues raised by skeptics: biases from urban heating (we duplicated our results using rural data alone), from data selection (prior groups selected fewer than 20 percent of the available temperature stations; we used virtually 100 percent), from poor station quality (we separately analyzed good stations and poor ones) and from human intervention and data adjustment (our work is completely automated and hands-off).?

Their conclusion ? none of these potential biases matter in the overarching result that climate change is real, and humans are primarily the cause.

Now, this is not to say that Dr. Muller has removed all of his skepticism regarding claims as to what climate change has and has not caused. The scientist still maintains that ?much, if not most, of what is attributed to climate change is speculative, exaggerated or just plain wrong.? But, the scientist maintains that, as carbon dioxide emissions increase so should the earth?s temperature.

For those who believe in the scientific evidence supporting climate change, Dr. Muller?s conclusions bring excitement and great potential. It brings hope of a new beginning for the climate change discussion. One where the nation moves from the discussion from ?if? to ?what should we do??

According to Dr. Muller, his team?s analysis of the data has indicated that the next step is to find agreement ?across the political and diplomatic spectrum about what can and should be done.?

The 4 Do's And Don'ts Of Home Improvement | GreenWerks

The 4 Do?s And Don?ts Of Home Improvement

So many home owners have the best intentions at heart and the biggest dreams when they undertake their home improvement project but somehow along the way they discover that what they thought would fulfil their dreams is slowly turning into a nightmare.

This is because they go into the project completely na?ve, thinking that everything will somehow work itself out. To avoid major heartbreaks, there are some do?s and don?ts that you ought to keep in mind in before you start and during your home improvement project.

1. Do plan

As with any other project, a proper plan needs to be in place before you begin your home improvements. Have in mind the exact specifics of what you want done in your house, and be sure that the project will actually be beneficial to you.

You should be aware that the notion that every home improvement automatically translates into an increase in home value is misguided. Plan your projects carefully to make sure that they are not just a waste of your money.

Planning also involves the creation of a budget. You do not want your money to run out when your contractor has just torn apart your bathroom and you have to live in the house in that condition until you can gather enough money to have the project completed!

Determine all the expenses that will be incurred, from the cost of hiring labour to that of buying materials, and see for yourself whether you have enough to sustain the project to completion. This is also the time to research on cost-saving tips.

2. Do not try to overhaul everything at once

Some homeowners are so excited to be finally remodeling their homes into what they have always dreamed of that they start tearing down walls and generally creating a proper mess of things. Not only are such antics foolish, they are also dangerous.

Before you tear anything down, consult with your contractor, you do not want to destabilize the structure of your house in the process. Also, blindly trying to overhaul everything can lead to you spending more than you should have. With some careful consideration you are sure to find pieces of furniture worth saving, you do not need to throw everything out.

3. Do only what you are capable of

In this do-it-yourself generation and all the resources available on home improvements, some foolhardy home owners try to do things which they really do not have the capacity to handle. While it is true that you can save quite some money on labour by taking on some projects for yourself, some are best to be left to the professionals.

Things like wiring and plumbing should be left to people who have actually received training in those fields. Unless you are an expert, do not attempt projects that involve these aspects on your own. You might wind up having to pay a lot more on damage control than you would have to just have a professional do it for you.

4. Do hire a good contractor

The type of contractor you get will determine whether you have a successful project or a disaster waiting to happen. So many home owners have had to go through unnecessary loss, just because they hired a contractor who was not properly qualified and did a shoddy job, or one who was a crook and used poor materials to complete the project so that they would make an extra profit.

Because there are no specific guidelines per se governing the trade, it might be a daunting task knowing how to tell a good contractor from a bad one. One of the easiest ways to pick a good one is to get a personal recommendation from someone who has also had some repairs done in their house.? As they have experienced first-hand the contractor?s services they will be better placed to advise you on them.

A good contractor however can only do so much with unclear instructions. Work done perfectly and with the best materials which is the exact opposite of what you wanted will do no one any good. Make sure you are on the same page with your good contractor and you are sure to get that house that you always dreamed of.

Nigeria bracing for broadband boom

Nigeria?s Minister of Communications Technology Omobola Johnson said that the country needs to seriously invest in correcting the country?s ubiquitous Internet capacity and national backbone, and it has become almost as important as having adequate water and transportation.

Nigeria?s Minister of Communications Technology Omobola Johnson (image: file)

?The emerging trend in Information Communications Technology (ICT) across the globe shows broadband penetration to be yet the unconquered territory in the sector especially in most of the developing countries, thus the need for aggressive handling, to boost efficiency in public safety, government and citizen interaction, education and healthcare provision, as well as the overall organisation and dissemination of knowledge,? she said during a presentation at the Nigerian Broadband Forum.

She added that there is a direct correlation between Internet penetration in a country and its Gross Domestic Product. ?Broadband and its universal access is becoming a significant indicator of development and competitiveness amongst nations. Empirical data tells us that every 10 per cent in access to broadband in every developing countries result in a commensurate 1.38 per cent increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).?

?These compelling statistics should provide the impetus to meet broadband demand, and if the demand is not there, create that demand. Nigeria prides itself on a telecoms revolution that catapulted us from 400,000 subscribers to over 90 million subscribers today,? she said.

She went on to say that the country will do everything in its power to promote the development of broadband in Nigeria. ?We must deplore every strategy and essential ingredient used to achieve the success story of the penetration of mobile telephony as in the case of the delivery of broadband services in Nigeria?.

Last week Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Eugene Juwah said that it is worrying that Internet penetration is low in the country.

?Broadband penetration is estimated to be less than 2 per cent in Nigeria, while the average broadband penetration in Africa is estimated at about 4 per cent; this is worrisome if the country is to be among the knowledge economy by 2020. Thus, the commission hopes to make a regulatory to take technology to the larger segment of the Nigerian society by creating environment and incentives for private sector participation

EYES ON LONDON: Nerves, Phelps slow, first gold

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

MY LEGS WERE SHAKING

American Timothy Wang is already out of his first Olympics.

He lost his first table tennis match in four straight games on Saturday to North Korean Kim Song Nam. The experience lasted just a few minutes, beaten 11-5, 11-4, 11-7, 11-4 in the knockout tournament before about 4,000 fans.

He probably spoke for many first-time Olympians ? and even experienced ones ? about being very nervous.

"I walked out and as soon as everyone started cheering, I started to get goose bumps. My legs were shaking while I was playing. The nerves definitely kicked in. I tried to focus before the match, but I really wasn't expecting it when I came out. Over here every match is like center court and all the eyes are on you. In tournaments in the U.S., very few people are there."

ROYAL SIGHTING

It's just how she likes it. Princess Anne crossed the road in front of me in Green Park. And, despite the crowds, she went mostly unnoticed, although there was a smattering of cheers.

The queen's daughter is as low-key as a British royal can be. And the British public seems to respect her wishes.

TECH FAIL

Japanese volleyball coach Masayoshi Manabe is missing his trusty iPad. Turns out there's no wireless for the coaches to use at the Earls Court venue, something that isn't going over well.

"There is no wi-fi available here. All the teams are in the same condition. We are talking to the organizers," Manabe said through a translator.

Japan swept Algeria 3-0 in the opening match. For now at least, looks like they can do without technology.

FIRST GOLD

And the first gold medal has gone to China. Yi Siling has just triumphed in the women's 10-meter air rifle shooting.

SLOW PHELPS

Michael Phelps was surprisingly slow in the 400-meter individual medley prelims Saturday. He barely made the field and will swim in Lane 8 in the final.

No big deal, right? All lanes are the same.

Not exactly, according to a tweet from former Olympic swimmer Summer Sanders: "Lane 8 is worse than Lane 1 because Phelps breathes to the right on the way home. He won't see the rest of the field."

I CRIED LIKE A BABY

London Mayor Boris Johnson says he spent all night dreaming about the opening ceremony and thinks it was better than China's stunning show four years ago.

"Call me chauvinistic, call me jingoistic, but I think we knocked the spots off Beijing last night," Johnson said.

"From the beginning I was crying like a baby. I just thought it was brilliant."

He lauded the cultural complexity of Danny Boyle's production.

"We weren't just Beefeaters and Big Ben. It was the real story of this country," he said.

BILL GATES

The table tennis venue is abuzz with talk that Bill Gates will show up on Saturday ? and he'd see a familiar face in young American singles player Ariel Hsing.

The 16-year-old Californian is friends with Gates and fellow billionaire Warren Buffett, having played demonstration matches against the two earlier this year at Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting.

She knows them well enough to call them "Uncle Bill" and "Uncle Warren." Is that cool or what?

"BLAST-OFF!" thundered the Daily Mail; "Quirky and eccentric ... oh, how very British," judged the Daily Express; "TORCH OF GENIUS: QUEEN IN SKYFALL," was the Daily Mirror's take.

The Times led with a screen grab of James Bond, the queen and her corgis strutting down the red carpet of Buckingham Palace. Its headline: "Shaken and stirred."

The Sun, world famous for its in-your-face headlines, simply said "WOW" on the front page, with "FLAMING FANTASTIC" inside.

WHO'S IN CHARGE?

There's a battle for authority at points along Saturday morning's cycling road course. Even soldiers are being ordered around.

A military man in uniform demanded to be allowed to cross the road. A female police officer told him he could go through the gate, but the volunteer refused to open it. They all argued before he climbed atop the gate, saying simply "I'm crossing!"

He then fell hard on his knees on the pavement.

EARLY GOLD RUSH

The Americans won't waste any time setting the tone for the women's gymnastics competition.

The reigning world champs and gold medal favorites are up first on vault in Sunday's qualifying session. AUSSIE FAN POWER

Australia's archery coach James Park and a handful of athletes got an early start, heading out on the Tube to Green Park to find a place to cheer along their countrymen participating in the cycling road race.

"We're just spectators today," said Park, who will no doubt be backing sprinter Matt Goss.

Mark Cavendish has a chance to give host Great Britain its first medal. But Goss could challenge if it comes down to a sprint finish.

The race goes through London's streets, then into the Surrey countryside and ends outside Buckingham Palace mid-afternoon.

TWO-WAY TRAFFIC

At 7 a.m. fresh-eyed fans were streaming into Olympic Park ready for the action. On their commute, they couldn't help but notice the stragglers going home in the opposite direction. And some were still in party mode.

Near King's Cross station in central London, in an apparent attempt to inject some Winter Olympics ice dance action into the celebrations, one man picked up his girlfriend and straddled her on his shoulders before (successfully) spinning her around two or three times and gently placing her back down on the footpath, giving the early morning travellers their first smiles of the day.

Beach volleyball in the heart of central London will highlight Olympic competition Saturday, along with the first swimming medals. American rivals Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will face off in the 400-meter individual medley.

Two-time U.S. defending gold medalist pair Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor will be the feature match in the beach volleyball grandstand.

"It's amazing. Just this area in itself is so special," Walsh Jennings said. "You have the Horse Guards right there and the changing of the guard and you get to see this and all the historic culture. FLASHBACK ? BERLIN 1936: "Reichsfuehrer Adolf Hitler, attired in a brown uniform and smiling genially, formally launched the Eleventh Olympiad today amid ceremonies dazzlingly brilliant despite dripping skies marked by vividly contrasting demonstrations obviously fraught with political as well as sporting significance. ... The big United States delegation, surpassed in size only by the Germans who formed the procession as rear guard, was accorded a doubtful reception. Changing plans suddenly overnight to avoid the appearance of giving only a modified Nazi salute under the original intentions to extend arms with hats in hand, the Americans reverted to the former custom of doffing their hats and placing them over the heart while giving 'eyes right.'"

Australia defends defence cuts

Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith defended military spending cuts, saying the belt-tightening would not impact overseas operations or those with key ally the United States.

Canberra announced in May that it would slash Aus$5.5 billion (US$5.76 billion) from its defence budget as part of sweeping government cuts, deferring or scrapping jet and weapons deliveries and sacking 1,000 staff.

Smith said he had spoken with US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on three occasions about the cuts, which do not involve cutting military personnel numbers or overseas operations, most recently last week.

"And he is absolutely convinced, as I am, that the cuts that we have made in our defence programme continue to protect our long-term capability but most importantly don't have any adverse consequences for our overseas operations," he told ABC TV on Sunday.

"And don't have any adverse implications for what we are doing with the United States, our enhanced practical cooperation, whether that's (US) marines in Darwin or the prospect of enhanced aviation access to our airbases in the Northern Territory."

Australia has some 1,500 troops serving in Afghanistan as well as peacekeeping deployments in East Timor and the Solomon Islands, and is set to became a critical regional ally of the United States in the Asia-Pacific.

Some 2,500 US Marines are to be stationed in northern Australia by 2016-17 under a military deal signed with US President Barack Obama last year.

"We both share a view, which is we would both like to be spending more as far as defence is concerned, but we are both facing these economic and fiscal constraints," Smith said of his talks with Panetta.

Smith rejected the idea that Australia was "taking a free ride" on Washington when it came to defence, saying the nation continued to be in the top 13 or 14 military spenders.

"In Afghanistan for example we are the 10th largest contributor, we are the largest non-NATO contributor and we are the third-largest special forces contributor," he said.

"And we're also the country in our part of the world most active in enhancing our practical cooperation with the United States as the United States rebalances into the Pacific."

Smith said as Australian forces were drawn down in Afghanistan, and with the prospect of troops leaving the Solomon Islands and East Timor, the defence ministry would review developments in a white paper to be delivered next year.

Google confirms it still has a 'small portion' of Street View WiFi data, apologizes

Google confirms it still has a 'small portion' of controversial Street View data, apologizes

It has seemed like Google was close to putting its Street View snooping controversy behind it a few times now, but one thing or another keeps bringing it back to the forefront. Today, it's an admission from Google that it hasn't deleted all of the so-called payload data in question after all. That revelation comes in a letter from Google Global Privacy Counsel Peter Fleisher to Steve Eckersley, head of enforcement at the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (or ICO), in which Fleisher says that Google is still in possession of a "small portion of payload data collected by our Street View vehicles in the UK." Fleisher adds that Google "apologizes for this error," and says that the data was discovered after an extensive review of its Street View data that it has been conducting in recent months. For its part, the ICO has acknowledged that it received the letter, and notes that the data was supposed to have been deleted in December of 2010, adding that "the fact that some of this information still exists appears to breach the undertaking to the ICO signed by Google in November 2010." Health, Beauty and Health ? Truths And Lies About Health and Fitness

There are many truths about health and fitness, and some lies that are not really untrue. When it comes to exercise and people the body works differently with each of us. It is not always true for all people. You should take time to research and learn, and you will get to the truths about health and fitness. That is a real clue to getting to the truths about health and fitness.

You ideally should take the time to research and learn. Research is the only way to make sure there is solid information about health and fitness. You can find several yoga and back pain products online. The marketing for yoga states that practicing these poses will help with back pain. This is only true for some cases, making this statement misleading and dangerous. If the cause of your back pain is muscle related than yoga can be helpful. You can stretch and strengthen the muscles in your back by doing yoga. Once you have done that, your back pain may very well go away. Doing yoga will not relieve back pain due to bone issues such as a problem with a spinal disc, however. In fact, doing yoga with a spinal column issue can cause serious complications.

The only way to benefit is to work your muscles until they are sore but not painful. If you are living by this motto you are making a mistake. There is a huge difference between working tough, or having a hard workout, and working out while you are in obvious pain. If you experience pain after a workout that doesn?t go away or only appears to be getting worse, stop doing the exercise bike activity. You will only cause yourself more complications by continuing an exercise that is causing you pain.

Mental horsepower is only one benefit of fitness exercises. What this means for you is that your brain will become more powerful and will operate with the highest level of performance possible. Regular exercise has been proven to increase circulation. This is also good for the brain, you will also notice increased serotonin levels in the brain.

More serotonin in the brain is shown to improve mental clarity. This is of course not a bad thing. All fitness areas have some truth or myths associated with them.Sometimes they are general statements while other times they are specifically related to various types of physical exercise. Before you engage in any exercise, do the research first.

Samuel Foreland is a good instructor in terms on physical fitness and has lots of knowledge about fitness tips motivation. Check out all about his expertise through exercise bike reviews and you will learn more with his easy, great methods regarding biking exercises including the best exercise bike.

Hypocrite Elitist Chuck Schumer Adds Magazine Restriction ...

AmmoLand Gun News

AmmoLand Gun News

New Jersey --(Ammoland.com)- Gun Grabber and hypocritical elitist NY State Senator Chuck Schumer added an Amendment banning all belts, magazines , or other firearms feeding devices over a 10 round capacity yesterday to a pending Cyber Security Bill.

As I have previously pointed out, this proposal goes even further then the now expired 1994 to 2004 Federal ?Assault Weapons Ban?, in that it bans the manufacture, sale, transfer or possession of these legal firearms accessories if the Cyber Bill with Schumers Amendment becomes law, unless one owned them prior to the date the law would take effect.

No mention is made of how exactly a law-abiding Citizen would be required to prove they owned such items prior to an arbitrary date. People don?t generally keep receipts for such things for very long, if at all. So, if the worst came to pass and the magazine ban becomes law, will 10?s of millions of law-abiding Citizens be forced to destroy or turn in their lawfully purchased and legally owned property simply because they cant prove when they acquired it?

Then there?s the fact, if Citizens are required to turn in or destroy their property to come into compliance, will they be compensated for their losses? If so, by who? How? Who decides what the items are worth? Large numbers of firearms owners have significant amounts of money invested in their collections and accessories. What about the Constitutional hazard of such a clear ?ex-post facto? law?

Wait, this is Chuck Schumer after all, he and his fellow tyrants in the Gun Control movement dont care about such pesky details like the Constitutionality of what they want or its consequences. After-all, following the law is something for ?the little people?, not Elitist?s like Schumer and his co-conspirator?s.

Schumer is the poster boy for hypocritical elites and their views towards Citizens. He never misses a chance to clamor for more Gun Control, but famously had an apparently very enjoyable time firing a gun, one that would fall under any new ?assault weapons ban?, equipped with a magazine he now wants banned.

Then there?s the somewhat more famous case of the testimony given by Dr Suzanna Hupp before a Congressional Panel on Gun Control in the wake of the Luby?s Cafeteria Massacre, in which she lost her parents to deranged gunman George Hennard. Schumer sat on the panel Hupp testified before and can be clearly seen arrogantly rolling his eyes with abundant disdain when Hupp pointed out to the panel that the Second Amendment is NOT about ? hunting?, or ?sport? , its about the right of Americans to protect themselves from tyranny at the hands of government.

A government populated with people like Chuck Schumer, people that never hesitate to consolidate power, people like Chuck Schumer, that don?t hesitate to do everything they can to ensure Americans will be unable to effectively fight back when they decide to take away just a few more rights.

Relationships Aren't Love Affairs ? suggestivetongue

I just finished the book Wabi Sabi Love: The Ancient Art of Perfect Love in Imperfect Relationships?by Arielle Ford. I picked this book up as a new release because occasionally it can be enlightening to read a good book about relationships. This one was no exception. No matter how much experience (literary or personal) you have in love and relationships, you always learn something new, and you always get good reminders. This book made me sad at times, and really happy at others. While there was brief mentions of God or religion (very brief, IMO) it was always very respectful. It wasn?t ?hands off, God will do things for you? and it wasn?t ?You should do this for God? ? ?it was using God as a backbone for the choices that you make in life, and seeking strength in the beliefs you have that things will be OK. I really enjoyed that, as someone who is not religious.

If I had to summarize the book, it would be in the title line. Relationships Aren?t Love Affairs. The other makes the point that love affairs are about passion. Relationships (and subsequently marriages) are about the irritants that two people have to make them stronger together. Certainly it?s all about love, and happiness, and pleasure, and fun, but it?s also about the work that two people put into a relationship to make it stronger.

Here are some notes, and thoughts, that I jotted down in my notebook from themes the book gave.

When you suffer, when you have a history, you become stronger and more beautiful. It doesn?t damage you or make you less-than.

Crisis can be used as a way to bring two people together and make them stronger. You are forced to admit your faults and your mistakes, and your true self. The fact that you are human and can do wrong shouldn?t be seen as a breaking point, but rather a turning point.

On the thought that a baby can bring love and enrich your marriage/relationship. It is another example of how much love we have to give and spread. Another baby doesn?t make you love your husband less, it makes you love your husband more. Presumably. This point is often used when talking about polyamory. Your partner experiences love or emotion for someone else, but it doesn?t mean they love you less. That love they give can help strengthen?your relationship, because your partner is happy and satisfied. No mention of polyamory (that I can recall) was given in the book. But a lot of the tools could be useful in any style of relationship.

Forgiveness and sincere apologizes are important. Don?t forgive unless you truly forgive. Don?t harbor ill will towards people while you smile and say that everything is OK.

All you can control in life is your response. You cannot, can never, and will not control someone else. I would suppose the harder you try, the more they will rebel ? in some cases. Bad things happen to even the most wonderful people and it?s how you choose to react to these situations that makes you and your relationship.

You should trust your intuition in relationships, not scripts. For instance if you are cheated on the script is that your partner should not be trusted and you should leave them and never return again. If your intuition says this is true, do it. But if your intuition tells you that your partner feels poorly for the mistakes they have made and you want to make your relationship work, don?t feel pressured to do what you ?should? do ? do what you feel is right.

You should not have to end a relationship to feel freedom. If you feel trapped, why do you feel trapped? How can you seek and experience freedom in your relationship? We may not want freedom from our partners, but from the imaginary things we feel bind us to them.

How do we act differently when our children do something badly, or when our partner does something badly? We expect adults to do no wrong, to know better, to not make mistakes. When a child makes a mistake we may tell them what they did wrong and why it was wrong and what to do the next time. We may not give this benefit to adults, who are also still learning, and also still need space to grow.

Share the truths that you are afraid of. RAFT: Reluctant and frighted to share. These things can help you grow closer to your partner, and help you have a more honest relationship. Keep your RAFT short and concise. Tell them you are RAFT ? but you want to step out of your comfort zone to share a part of yourself with them.

We have many soul mates in life, for different purposes, different kinds of love. Nurture those relationships and they will nurture you back.

?In love the paradox occurs that two beings become one and yet remain two.? ? Erich Fromm

Irritation over time turns a relationship into a pearl. The things that once made us crazy can make us grateful later. Learn to love the flaws ? the things that makes your partner unique. Find goodness in those flaws.

Our care takes many forms. How does your partner care for you, and how do you care for them? This may look different, and you may not at first perceive it as a care. (For instance: Cooking and cleaning for your partner may be a small act of caring that the partner may perceive as a duty, because this may not be a form of caring that they relate to.) Learn your partners style of caring, the little things they do for you that shows their love.

In order to help someone you have to first help yourself (Re: Putting the mask on in an airplane first before you help others do so) You need to make sure you are in order before you can help others. Fill yourself up with good things (food, sleep, exercise, things that make you happy) so you have more to give. Make?yourself happy. Know how to.

Refuse to suffer in bad situations. Give your partner space and do what you need to do. Offer compassion. Think about how you can care for them and your relationship, now how you can fix the problem or change your partner.

Stocks rally amid optimism over Europe

By NBC News and wire services

Updated at 11:05 a.m. ET: Stocks rallied at Thursday?s opening bell after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said his bank is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the single currency.

The news buoyed investors worried about the impact of the ongoing debt crisis in Europe on the U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average rallied over 200 points at the start of trading, but was lately off that high.

Speculation had been rising that the ECB, which holds a policy meeting next week, is considering new measures to tackle the euro zone's debt crisis as countries such as Spain and Italy struggle to fund themselves and evidence grows of a region-wide economic slowdown.

"Within our mandate, the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro. And believe me, it will be enough," Draghi told a pre-Olympic games investment conference in London.

In a reference to the high premiums peripheral European nations including Spain are forced to pay to raise funds, Draghi said: "To the extent that the size of the sovereign premia hamper the functioning of the monetary policy transmission channels, they come within our mandate."

Before the speech the problems of Spain and Greece had dominated market attention.

Facebook is set to deliver it's first-ever financial results as a public company after the close of trading Thursday.

A worry for Facebook came late Wednesday when social game maker Zynga delivered disappointing financial results. The gaming company reported a more challenging environment on the Facebook web platform, where it makes money by offering free games and selling virtual goods.

Zynga's shares were lately down sharply.

In economic news, a report showed the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell last week to near a four-year low, a hopeful sign for a labor market that has shown signs of weakness.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 35,000 to a seasonally adjusted 353,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

That was a much sharper drop than economists expected. The prior week's figure was revised slightly higher.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Lee Sachs, Alliance Partners CEO, weighs in on comments made today by the ECB's Mario Draghi's pledge to do whatever is needed to save the euro zone.

India team upset with kit: report

Indian medal hopefuls at the London Olympics are upset with their "poor quality" kit and uniforms, a newspaper reported on Friday.

"To be honest, this is the worst kit I have seen," Indian boxer Jai Bhagwan, who is to compete in the men's lightweight (60-kg) category, was quoted as saying by the Mumbai Mirror newspaper.

"It's of poor quality, lacks durability and some of it does not even fit right. Our kit in national competitions (back home) was of much better quality," he told the paper from London.

The tabloid also said that Indian hockey ace Sandeep Singh had been spotted playing in ill-fitting shorts which were "bursting at the seams".

Singh later trained in an old pair of torn shorts "as a mark of protest", the Mirror reported.

The kits were supplied by a local firm Dida, which bagged the contract from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ahead of better known sports suppliers.

Dida denied there had been any complaints about quality.

"The kits are fine, they have to be, since it was approved by the IOA," Deepak Nagia, a Dida official was quoted as saying by the paper.

India, a perennial underachiever at the Olympics given its population, is hopeful of a better showing at the Games having sent its largest ever contingent to London.

Its team won just one gold and two bronze medals at the Beijing Games.

Amelia Earhart: No more clues to be found?

Google is celebrating the 115th birthday of the aviatrix Amelia Earhart on Tuesday. The group searching for remains of Earhart's disappeared?plane?is returning to shore.

A team trying to solve the mystery of Amelia Earhart's fate 75 years after she vanished over the Pacific has ended its expedition to a remote island without finding her plane, the group said.

Researchers on July 3 set off on a $2.2 million expedition and traveled 1,800 miles by ship from Honolulu to Nikumaroro in the Republic of Kiribati to search for clues to her disappearance in 1937.

"We are returning from Nikumaroro with volumes of new sonar data and hours upon hours of high-definition video," The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery said in a statement on Monday.

TIGHAR did not immediately release details about what the sonar data or video might show, and it did not say that any plane wreckage it had sought has been recovered.

Earhart, along with her navigator Fred Noonan, set out to circumnavigate the globe along an equatorial route.

Richard Gillespie, executive director of TIGHAR, has said that he believes Earhart died a castaway in searing hot Nikumaroro, which is 400 miles southeast of the Howland Island destination that Earhart and Noonan had been aiming for when they disappeared. Before radio contact was lost, Earhart had said from the air that her plane was short on fuel.

Gillespie has said evidence found on Nikumaroro in previous expeditions included what appeared to be a bottle of 1930s anti-freckle cream, bits of clothing and human bone fragments, which have led some to believe Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan may have been marooned on the island.

TIGHAR said on its website that researchers are on their way back to Honolulu after cutting short the expedition due to equipment malfunctions. They spent five days on site, but had planned to be there for 10 days.

Researchers had said they believed Earhart's Lockheed Electra plane could rest in waters off Nikumaroro, where they suspect she survived for weeks or months.

During the five days they spent searching, the crew of expedition ship Niku VII was challenged by the undersea environment, in the form of a craggy reef slope with vertical cliffs stretching down for between 110 feet and 250 feet, the group said on its website.

On July 19, the expedition's blog questioned whether an aircraft that sank 75 years ago could even be found. Not only is the area filled with nooks, crannies and caves, but it is possible the aircraft might have floated away, the group said.

Pat Thrasher, president of TIGHAR, said the Niku VII expedition crew will arrive in Honolulu at the end of this month, at which point Gillespie, who was on the expedition, will be available to answer questions.

Once the crew returns to land, the TIGHAR team will review and analyze the new material. The search for answers to Earhart's disappearance was documented for a Discovery Channel television special set to air on August 19.

Google shows off Creator Space in London, hopes to foster more professional YouTube videos

Google confirmed a few months back that it was looking to build some studios in at least a few cities to give YouTube video makers a more professional workspace, and we now have our first good look at exactly what it's had in mind. The company's today released a video showcasing its new London-based Creator Space, which is said to be opening its doors in the "next few weeks" in Google's own Soho office. While there's no word on the costs involved just yet, the space does certainly look to be well-equipped, boasting a range of DSLRs and professional video cameras, a green screen room, lighting rigs, editing suites, and audio booths -- not to mention lectures and workshops to help folks get the most out of all that gear. No further word on those other studios just yet, but you can get a glimpse of this one after the break.

Epic Meal Time review - the bacon-covered turkey-stuffed pig of Android games

Epic Meal Time review - the bacon-covered turkey-stuffed pig of Android games

Epic Meal Time has just turned their debaucherous online cooking show into an Android game, and as a meat-lover, I couldn't be happier. It's a simple game that involves guiding steaks, slices of pizza, and bacon strips into the host's face, while flinging away broccoli, turnips, and other greens. Energy drinks, booze, chocolate syrup, and whole pigs keeps things interesting while players earn Internet Money to finance new swag and a wider variety of food.

For those of you unfamiliar, Epic Meal Time has been on YouTube for a little over two years, showcasing extravagant abominations that can barely be considered food by traditional standards. Rarely does a weekly episode go by that doesn't involve Jack Daniels, Four Loko, or bacon of some kind. Lately they've been branching out into desserts with obscene calorie counts, but at its core EMT is all about making carnivore dreams come true. Vegetarians (or anyone with a sense of modesty) may want to skip this video, one of their earlier breakout episodes.

Spoken word artists need recognition | wsusna

Nqontsonqa is a poet who hails from Grahamstown. He also performed at this year?s National Arts Festival.
Photographer: supplied

By Nwabisa Pondoyi
Poets face different challenges when it comes to expressing themselves through spoken word as some societies do not recognise this form of art.
Reciting poetry is an artistic performance that brings words to life in which stories or lyrics are spoken rather than sung, where artists get an opportunity to express their views on religion, gender, politics and sex.
Chris Gilili, 18, spoken word artist said: ?Most of the time we are misunderstood by our societies simply because we are stereotyped. People often have questions such as how can you make a living out of words and how do you think this will establish you. Then again often they don?t know what spoken word really is, where it comes from and what it really means to be an artist.?
According to the site: spokenwordparis.blogspot.com: ?Spoken word was first recognised in the late 1980s and early 1990s through the emergence of ?poetry slams? where spoken-word artists would square off in cabaret-style duels. Slam poetry is still the most popular form of spoken word especially for young people to express their views, experiences or information that is often taboo to society.?
Onako Gubula, 14, spoken word artist, said: ?Every time I meet people they look at me and think that I?m some maths genius but really the only thing I know are my words, to me its words before breakfast, they run in my blood.?
When the society does not support spoken word artists they can bear with it but when their own families do not support them it is then that they face their biggest challenge.
Loyiso Lindani, best known as Missunderstood by her fans, said: ?My journey as a spoken word artist has been an interesting one. I have met a lot of people who believe in me, because they have read my craft before. But with family it?s different they misunderstand me, being a spoken word artist doesn?t mean I can?t think properly, that I?m not focused. I know what I want, I do what I want and I love what I do.
?I had my own issues growing up, lost my parents, dropped out of school. After all the craziness there was silence. I discovered that what I am is an artist and spoken word is everything I believe in, the air I breathe, the water I drink; it?s my spirituality, everything in me, through it I?m most honest. Spoken word is my life,? said Missunderstood.
Nqontsonqa?s journey is a different one. He said: ?People and family have always been appreciative of my poetry and to me poetry evolved from so many things. It?s a tool for social matters and entertainment; it?s a communication skill, freedom of expression and portrayal of my thoughts.?
Any form of spoken word piece can be powerful with the right emotion backing it and the emphasis kept on the speaker. Spoken word is really a play of words. There?s only one rule: make the words alive. ? WSU-SNA
