EU, U.S. on verge of "difficult" free-trade negotiations

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - The United States and the European Union are wrapping up final preparations for talks on a free-trade agreement that would encompass half the world's economic output, Europe's trade chief said on Saturday, while warning of "difficult negotiations."

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht will travel to Washington on February 5 to put the finishing touches on a joint EU-U.S. report. He gave his clearest signal yet that Brussels and Washington are ready to embark on the accord.

"Essentially the report is ready. I will go to Washington to discuss a couple of small items and for a final reading. But essentially we're on the same page," De Gucht told Reuters in an interview in the Chilean capital Santiago.

"These will be difficult negotiations."

A trade deal between the world's two largest economies encompassing 800 million people would unleash billions of dollars in transatlantic business, advocates say.

It could also allow Europe and the United States to define the rules of global trade before China and India do.

The 27-nation European Union and the United States already account for nearly a third of world trade, but a banking and debt crisis in Europe and meager American growth are pushing both sides to consider removing the final barriers to trade.

U.S. companies have invested some $1.9 trillion in production, distribution and other operations in the EU, far more than in China. EU companies have invested about $1.6 trillion in the United States.

'NO LOW-HANGING FRUITS'

Given concerns about getting caught up in endless negotiations, U.S. President Barack Obama and EU leaders called on an expert group co-chaired by EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk to decide whether it was worth going ahead.

De Gucht said there was momentum for an agreement.

"We will have a common recommendation. If we were of the opinion that it was not worth trying, we wouldn't have put in this much time," he said.

A deal could increase Europe's economic output by 65 billion euros ($87.59 billion) a year, equivalent to a 0.52 percent rise into the EU's gross domestic product, according to the European Commission, benefiting industries from chemicals to automakers.

Both sides know negotiations will require compromises.

The United States and the European Union already have low tariffs on their goods, but what businesses really want is access to each others markets through common regulations.

They would like to see a pact, for example, in which a car tested for safety in the United States would not have to be tested again in Europe, and a drug deemed safe by Brussels would not have to be approved by the U.S. government as well.

"It's not about low-hanging fruits or an early harvest," De Gucht said. "I have no illusions that this will be easy."

Assange: WikiLeaks film script leaked to WikiLeaks

(AP) ? WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange says he has obtained the script for "The Fifth Estate," a DreamWorks film about the Australian maverick and his world famous secret-busting site.

In comments to the Oxford Union debating society, Assange said the script was a "recent acquisition" but didn't say how it was obtained. A DreamWorks spokeswoman declined to comment on his claim.

Assange was withering about the movie, which is to be released in November, calling it a "mass propaganda attack" on his site's work.

He made the comments to the Oxford Union on Wednesday via videolink from the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, where he has been holed up for more than six months in a bid to avoid extradition.

His speech was posted to the Web late Friday.

HTC-made au Infobar A02 launches in Japan, wraps unique Android UI in trippy body

HTC's au Infobar A02

KDDI's funky au Infobar is back! Once again designed by the famed Naoto Fukasawa, this A02 -- co-developed by HTC -- brings the series up to date with Qualcomm's 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 (but with just 1GB of RAM), 4.7-inch 720p display, 16GB of storage, microSD slot, 2,100mAh battery, LTE radio (800/1500) and Android 4.1. Better yet, this phone also supports both CDMA2000 800/2100 and WCDMA 850/1900/2100, making it a great global phone. Judging by one of the demo clips after the break, it seems that this Infobar's 8-megapixel main imager (with F2.0 lens) and 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera take advantage of HTC's ImageSense chip for speedy burst shots. Likewise, you'll find Beats Audio built into the system. As per typical Japanese mobile phone, the usual NFC (with Osaifu-Keitai mobile wallet), 1seg TV tuner and infrared are also packed inside the 9.7mm-thick, 147g-heavy waterproof (IPX5 and IPX7) and dustproof (IP5X) body.

We're already fans of the iconic nishikigoi (meaning "brocaded carp") color scheme as pictured above, but what really caught our attention this time are the fluid animations and uniqueness of the "iida UI" 2.0 (iida stands for "innovation," "imagination," "design" and "art") by interactive designer Yugo Nakamura. As you'll see in the video clips after the break, the home screen here shares some similarities with Windows Phone 8's counterpart -- in the way items snap to grid and resize, even though the former is enhanced by plenty of bouncy animation, more colors and funny sounds (designed by Japanese musician Cornelius). Expect this A02 -- which is also available in blue or gray -- to hit the Japanese market in mid-February.

YouSendIt (for iPhone)

Who among us hasn't felt the sting that comes when an email fails to reach its intended recipient due to a mammoth file attachment? YouSendIt specializes in remedying that problem by allowing users to upload large files to its servers and then share the simple, lightweight generated link with others. The company's revamped iPhone and iPod touch app not only lets you email large files with no worries, but lets you digitally sign documents and store files in the cloud as well. If any of those features sound appealing, the free YouSendIt app is worth a download.

The Basics
You start by creating a free account from within the app or login with your credentials should already have an account. After doing so, you're taken to the YouSendIt home screen where four icons live: My Folders, Send, Sign, and Store.

Tapping Send lets you upload a file from your My Folders, Photo Library, or Camera folders to YouSendIt's servers and then key in an email address. I like that YouSendIt displays how much data has been transferred so that you have a sense of how long the entire process will take. Once the email lands in the recipient's mailbox, YouSendIt sends you a confirmation email stating that the message was delivered. Much better than a bounce-back notification, eh?

In my testing on a relatively clean iPhone 5?YouSendIt for iPhone crashed a few times. The good news is that when I relaunched the app, it picked up where I let off pre-crash.

E-Signatures
YouSendIt now lets you digitally sign documents?an incredibly useful feature if you've ever had to Hancock a digital document. Here's how it works: when you receive a document via email, tap and hold the attachment, select Open in YouSendIt, and choose a destination folder. Tapping "Quick Sign" opens a blank area where you can scribble in a signature, change the font, or enlarge the signature's size.

That said, it's difficult to key in a signature while holding an iPhone vertically, as the screen slides from right to left as you write. Turning the phone horizontally, however, makes the process much easier as it scrolls at the pace that you finger your signature. You can save your e-signature for use at a later time, which is very handy.

YouSendIt also acts as a file storage service. Bringing a finger to "Store" lets you save a file to your allotted YouSendIt storage space.

Pricing and File Management
How you use YouSendIt directly corresponds to your account type. Free account holders can store a maximum of 2GB of data, five e-signatures, and upload files up to 50MB in size. Pro accounts (starting at $9.99 per month) house 5GB of data, hold 10 e-signatures, and let you upload 2GB files at a time. Pro Plus accounts (starting at $14.99 per month) one-up Pro accounts by offering unlimited file storage and e-signatures. There's a plan for nearly every user scenario.

Swiping over a folder or file opens the Open In, Email Link, Copy Link, Rename, and Delete options. I like that a user has to swipe to reveal these options as it keeps the interface uncluttered. My Folders offers additional options when you tap the drop-down arrow: Store, "Add New Folders, Sort Files, and Organize. This option set proves essential to keeping my YouSendIt files and folders organized,

A Highly Useful App
YouSendIt is an app you should have on your iPhone or iPod touch if you frequently find yourself in situations where you need to email large files. The e-signature feature is welcome bonus feature that proves equally useful. The crashes were a bit irritating, but they didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying the app. YouSendIt is a highly recommended convenience utility for the iPhone.

Yandex launches Wonder, a voice-controlled social search app for the US market (update)

Yandex

Yandex, the Russian search giant, has just launched its first product for the US market: a voice-controlled social search app called Wonder. Available on iOS, the app pulls data from your Facebook, Foursquare, Instagram and Twitter accounts to answer questions like "What music do my friends listen to?" Essentially, it's a mobile version of Facebook's new Graph Search, which also uses data from your social network contacts to answer questions. Wonder uses Nuance's speech-recognition tech to record and convert your words into text, and Yandex's own language software then processes those words (you can also type your queries, if you're so inclined). According to TechCrunch, which spoke with the company about the new app, Wonder is launching as a "pure experiment," with the intent to collect feedback as well as data from English-speaking users. Currently, the app is only available in the US, and it only supports questions about places, music and news. If you're packing an iDevice, you can click through to the App Store to download Wonder for free. Make sure to check out a video demo past the break, too.

Update: Facebook has thrown a spanner in the works, preventing the new app from accessing its API. The two sides are now discussing a way out of the impasse, which would need to meet Facebook's requirement that outside search engines only access its data with written permission. TechCrunch has more.

Potential benefits and threats of nanotechnology research

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Every day scientists learn more about how the world works at the smallest scales. While this knowledge has the potential to help others, it's possible that the same discoveries can also be used in ways that cause widespread harm.

A new article in the journal Nanomedicine, born out of a Federal Bureau of Investigation workshop held at the University of Notre Dame in September 2012, tackles this complex "dual-use" aspect of nanotechnology research.

"The rapid pace of breakthroughs in nanotechnology, biotechnology, and other fields, holds the promise of great improvements in areas such as medical diagnosis and treatment" says Kathleen Eggleson, a research scientist in Notre Dame's Center for Nano Science and Technology and the author of the study.

"But the risk of misuse of these breakthroughs rises along with the potential benefit. This is the essence of the 'dual-use dilemma.'"

The report examines the potential for nano-sized particles (which are measured in billionths of a meter) to breach the blood-brain barrier, the tightly knit layers of cells that afford the brain the highest level of protection -- from microorganisms, harmful molecules, etc. -- in the human body. Some neuroscientists are purposefully engineering nanoparticles that can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) so as to deliver medicines in a targeted and controlled way directly to diseased parts of the brain.

At the same time, the report notes, "nanoparticles designed to cross the BBB constitute a serious threat?in the context of combat." For example, it is theorized that "aerosol delivery" of some nano-engineered agent in "a crowded indoor space" could cause serious harm to many people at once.

The problem of dual-use research was highlighted last year when controversy erupted over the publication of findings that indicate how, with a handful modifications, the H5N1 influenza virus ("bird flu") can be altered in a way that would enable it to be transmitted between mammalian populations.

After a self-imposed one-year moratorium on this research, several laboratories around the world announced that they will restart the work in early 2013.

The FBI is actively responding to these developments in the scientific community.

"The law enforcement-security community seeks to strengthen the existing dialogue with researchers," William So of the FBI's Biological Countermeasures Unit says in the study.

"Science flourishes because of the open and collaborative atmosphere for sharing and discussing ideas. The FBI believes this model can do the same for our two communities?[and] create effective safeguards for science and national interests."

The scientists and engineers who conduct nanoscale research have the ability and responsibility to consider the public safety aspects of their research and to act to protect society when necessary, argues Eggleson.

"The relationship between science and society is an uneasy one, but it is undeniable on the whole and not something any individual can opt out of in the name of progress for humanity's benefit," she says.

"Thought about dual-use, and action when appropriate, is inherent to socially responsible practice of nanobiomedical science."

Crystal Cruises entices bookings through brand ... - Luxury Daily

Crystal Symphony

Crystal Cruises is eyeing affluent travelers by offering exclusive Mediterranean excursions on its spring itineraries that cannot be accessed through other travel brands.

The cruise line?s new collection of experiences called ?Boutique Adventures? will be available this spring for groups ranging from one to 15 travelers on Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity ships sailing to the Mediterranean. Guests will have exclusive access to estates, art studios, museums, castles and businesses.

?Our guests are looking for different ways to experience destinations and they relish insider access,? said Mimi Weisband, vice president of public relations at?Crystal Cruises, Los Angeles. ?We are continually challenging our tour operators to seek out the unusual, experiential, intimate, cultural adventures.

?Our guests do not want a mass-market excursion ? they will pay more for something if it is unique and authentic,? she said.

Cruising the Mediterranean
There are seven Boutique Adventures that guests can choose. The cost ranges from $223 to more than $1,000 per guest.

Travelers can book the excursions online up to six months before their cruise.

The Florence excursion comprises a viewing of the Uffizi Gallery?s private Contini Bonacossi Collection, which is not accessible to the public.

In Funchal, Portugal, guests will have lunch with a local celebrity at Reid?s Palace or visit a family-run Madeiran winery where they will dine with the owners.

During the Rome experience, guests will make their own jewelry with instruction from a former Valentino model who now designs jewelry.

The Corfu, Greece, excursion consists of a painting lesson from the president of the Corfu Painters Society.

In Italy?s Vetriano, guests will attend the opera at Teatro Concordia, the?smallest public theater in the world.

Teatro Concordia

Excursions in Sorrento and Taormina, Italy, comprise?cooking lessons and meals with local, Michelin-star chefs.

In Taormina in Italy?s Sicily region, travelers will be served a meal while watching a classical concert at a Sicilian castle.

Crystal Cruises will promote the Boutique Adventures via its Web site, quarterly magazine and the on-board Shore Excursion team, per Ms. Weisband.

In addition, travel agents will also inform their clients about the experiences.

?The cruise industry has been becoming more aware of the large portion of the affluent travelers who shy away from cruises due to many misconceptions and overall lack of desire to be on-board the mega-ships,? said D.M. Banks, director at?DMB Public Relations, New York.

?Crystal Cruises is always looking at ways to provide the luxuries of cruises, while providing a boutique experience for their guests,? he said. ?This is another example of them thinking outside of the box to truly connect with their guests.

?Affluent travelers are more than happy to pay a premium for superior services and, more importantly, unique and personalized experiences. These intimate and semi-private excursions are great ways for guest to feel more immersed into the culture and destinations while at port.?

Story time
The new Boutique Adventures are meant to align with Crystal Cruises? ?Begin a New Story? ad campaign that launched last year, per Ms. Weisband.

The cruise line rebranded itself during the second quarter of 2012 through an all-encompassing campaign that centers on the notion of the travel journal and encourages consumers to share memories from past cruises.

The marketing efforts focus on cruise destinations and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, rather than the amenities of the ship.

Begin a New Story uses multiple channels including print ads with digital watermark technology, brochures, online banner ads, email, video and a smartphone app.

For instance, print ads appear in Cond? Nast Traveler, National Geographic Traveler, Town & Country, Travel & Leisure, Coastal Living, Elle D?cor, Food & Wine and Forbes Life.

Consumers can scan the ads with their smartphones to reveal a 60-second video that shows three travelers? experiences in select Crystal Cruises? destinations through watercolor animation.

The brand asked eight watercolor artists to create images that are used in all aspects of the campaign (see story).

?The trend for affluent consumers is more intimate and incredibly special ? both of which are key to these excursions,? Ms. Weisband said.

?Entering someone?s home, sharing a meal with them and just a few other guests, and being able to hear in-depth stories of living and working in that area from your host ? these are experiences that can be deeply personal, bonding and memorable, really expanding one?s understanding of a culture far beyond any info gleaned from merely sight-seeing,? she said.

?Affluent consumers crave such experiences that go beyond the norm, as so many of them travel at a level well above the basics.?

Robotic refueling test resumes on space station

An International Space Station experiment testing the ability of robots to repair and refuel orbiting satellites has resumed, after being stalled for a week by a software glitch.

NASA's Robotic Refueling Mission (RRM) resumed operations Tuesday after engineers finished analyzing loads and software limits for the space station's Dextre robot, agency officials announced in a Tuesday mission update.

RRM calls for Dextre, which sits at the end of the orbiting lab's huge Canadarm2 robotic arm, to perform simulated refueling and repair tasks on a washing-machine-size platform affixed to the station's exterior.

    4. Mars rover Opportunity now in 10th year

The latest round of RRM experiments started Jan. 14 and was expected to last about 10 days, but a software glitch halted activities after just a day.

The RRM module, which consists of activity boards and tools necessary to demonstrate on-orbit refueling, launched to the station in July 2011 aboard the space shuttle Atlantis, which was making the last flight in the shuttle program's 30-year history.

The experiment's goal is to demonstrate technology that could someday fix and refuel orbiting satellites robotically, thereby extending their lives and potentially saving satellite operators billions of dollars over the long haul.

Such work can be challenging, since current satellites were generally not designed to be serviced.

The first RRM experiments began last year, when controllers on the ground used the two-armed Dextre to snip some wires with minimal clearance.

The latest round of activities will be more complex and involved, as Dextre will snip more wires, unscrew caps and pump simulated fuel, NASA officials have said.

Huawei tests 2Tbps data transmission over Vodafone's German network, calls it a 'first'

Huawei notches 2Tbps data transmission over Vodafone's network in Germany, calls it a 'world's first'

As terabit speeds go, Huawei's latest fiber feat falls on the lower end of recent industry achievements. At 2Tbps, the Chinese company's field test -- one it's hailing as a "world's first" -- comes nowhere close to the 100Tbps-plus experiments conducted by the likes of NEC and NICT. But top speed isn't entirely the point here; real-world performance is. By leveraging existing fiber infrastructure owned by Vodafone across portions of lower Germany, Huawei was able to successfully demonstrate two record-breaking, 200G transmissions: one spanning 1,500km and the other 3,325km over an "ultra-long-haul solution." To give you a bit of perspective on just what sort of data haul theoretical networks of this kind can achieve, Huawei claims this ultra-fast connection is "equivalent to downloading 40 HD videos in one second." Impressive, indeed. But don't go ditching that TWC wideband or FiOS contract just yet. While it's nice to know this tech exists, practical deployment is still a ways off. Until then, gigabit's the buzz word.

Huawei and Vodafone Complete World's First 2 Tbit/s WDM Field Trial

Shenzhen, China, 24 January 2013:

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology solutions provider, and Vodafone, one of the world's largest mobile communications companies, today announced the successful trial of 2 Tbit/s optical fiber transmission technologies on Vodafone's live network. The field trial achieved 2 Tbit/s transmission capabilities of over 3,325km. This provides a data highway capacity 20-times higher than current commercially deployed 100Gbit/s systems and has a speed equivalent to downloading 40 HD videos in one second. This marks an important step forward for optical transport technology advances beyond 100G.

Traffic on carrier backbone networks is growing exponentially, driving global momentum for commercial 100G deployments and attracting attention on optical transport beyond 100G. Riding on cutting-edge technologies such as flex oDSP, super SD-FEC, and flex modulation format, this field trial achieved a record-breaking transmission distance of 1,500 km using a super-channel PDM-16QAM-based high spectral efficiency solution, and a second record-breaking transmission distance of 3,325 km using a super-channel Nyquist PDM-QPSK-based ultra-long-haul solution. Both transmissions were on a link with G.652 fibers and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) without electrical regeneration. The link used in the trial was on Vodafone's backbone network, passing through a few cities across middle and south Germany.

"We are at the forefront of global 100G deployments, and have taken the lead in delivering key breakthroughs in technologies beyond 100G. Through collaboration with Vodafone and other leading international operators and customer-centric R&D, Huawei is always ready to build advanced optical networks for customers," said Jack Wang, president of Huawei's transport network product line.

To help customers optimize their overall technical architecture and adopt next-generation transport networks, Huawei conducted the world's first 2T WDM field trial and pan- European 400G field trial in 2012, and also unveiled a series of scientific research achievements in optical transmission. According to Ovum, Huawei ranks No. 1 in the WDM/OTN, 40G, 100G, and global optical network markets, as of Q3 2012.

When and if it might make sense to outsource Human Resources 4 ...

This is my fourth installment in a series in which I discuss issues and considerations that would go into determining whether Human Resources functions and processes should be retained in-house, or whether they should be outsourced to third party providers ? and if so for which services (see HR and Personnel, postings 134 and loosely following for Parts 1-3.)

I said at the end of Part 3 that I would turn to discuss the issues of in-house versus outsourced Human Resources from the employee and manager perspective in this posting and I begin doing so by grouping all employees ? with and without management responsibilities in their job descriptions and responsibilities, into one group of constituent stakeholders. And I bring their experience and needs into focus with an example that generically would be familiar to most any reader of this posting: calling a phone system customer help or support desk and particularly during off-hours.

I am writing explicitly about HR support and its availability and effectiveness, but cite a more widely experienced working example that would include help desk support in general, as outsourced HR help desk and phone based support carries with it essentially all of the same strengths and weaknesses as are found when consumers call for retail business or manufacturer customer support. All of these are third party provided from the caller perspective and both can involve connecting with people who are very distantly located and who are primarily if not exclusively reading from scripts, for any actual answers provided. And they can be badly written and inflexible scripts and read through the barriers of language and culture differences.

I have a lot of colleagues who I really respect professionally in places like Mumbai and Chennai, India (formally known as Bombay and Madras, respectively) and in businesses that provide third party help desk support. They and their competitors, collectively comprising a minor growth industry, have come to play an increasingly significant and pervasive element to the help desk and customer support system and for a tremendous range of commercial enterprises. And I add that some of my own best experiences in reaching out for help desk support as a consumer and business professional have come from distantly located professionals who spoke expertly and with concern for the customer. But I have to add that some of my most difficult and frustrating experiences have come from having to deal with poorly trained help desk and support personnel, reading from badly drafted scripts who did not have anyone to escalate a call to that they could not handle. And it is the bad experiences that we remember and talk about.

When an employee seeks help from a distant third party Human Resources center, chances at that they are calling about an issue or a problem that is very significant to them. This holds with equal force for lower level employees and for senior managers, or for anyone in-between. And when a business brings onboard a third party HR provider that comes to be seen from shared negative stories, as being more of a problem itself than an answer to problems, that raises questions about the competence of the business? leaders in general. If they cannot run their own business for its internal functioning and in ways that are supportive of the people who work there, what can they do right?

? This creates problems for rank and file employees and for their managers as they have to deal with members of their teams who are distracted and upset.
? This can negatively impact upon overall business productivity.
? This type of challenge can and does negatively impact on staff retention and particularly for employees who are most difficult to replace with special combinations of skills and experience ? that other businesses would be eager to hire away. Bad workplace experiences can in effect help lead your most valuable employees toward the exit.
? And I have to add that when communications disconnects and related problems stemming from poorly outsourced HR cause breakdowns in addressing issues such as discrimination or harassment challenges, that leads to very high level risks for the business as a whole and with potential consequences that can become very severe and very quickly.
? And once a Human Resources capability that was in-house is outsourced and dismantled, it can be difficult and expensive to recreate it back in-house again if outsourcing this area of business functionality has not worked out. Outsourcing is not irrevocable or nonreversible but doing so carries with it at least a short term costs-barrier that would have to be accepted and dealt with and that can be significantly large.

I write of this as a set of due diligence and risk identification and remediation issues, and outsourcing or keeping in-house an area of business functionality is always at least in significant part exactly that. From an employee perspective, outsourcing HR can be risky and with risks that outweigh benefits if it is not done effectively or if the wrong HR functions are shipped out.

I am going to turn next to consider Human Resources in the multinational corporation setting, and where centralization or dispersed localization, or some combination thereof would make more sense ? think of this as a discussion of where ?in-house outsourcing? might make sense, where that is how a business? employees would see this. Meanwhile, you can find this and related postings at HR and Personnel and also at Outsourcing and Globalization.

Kyle Busch signs multi-year deal to stay with JGR

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (AP) ? Joe Gibbs Racing announced Thursday that Kyle Busch has signed a long-term extension to continue driving the No. 18 Toyota Camry.

In addition, JGR will field the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota in the Nationwide Series for at least 25 races with Busch as the primary driver. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Busch, who has won 24 NASCAR Sprint Cup races and made the Chase for the Cup five times since 2005, said he chose to stay with JGR after weighing offers from two other ownership groups.

"It's something that is really exciting that we've been working on for a long time," Busch said. "I probably took a few years off coach's life, but hopefully not. I'll repay him somehow, maybe with some championships."

Busch has 105 career wins spanning all three NASCAR series, including 51 in the Nationwide Series. However, the 27-year-old Busch is coming off a disastrous season by his own standards.

He finished 13th in the Sprint Cup standings and missed the Chase. And while he ranked second in the Cup in laps led, he only found Victory Lane once and finished the year with 13 top-five finishes after winning a combined 19 races the previous four years.

Busch ran his own car in the Nationwide Series and was winless in 22 races, posting three seconds and two thirds after winning 40 races in the previous four seasons. He competed in three events on the Camping World Truck series but failed to win there, too.

He called it his "worst season ever."

During negotiations, Busch said, Gibbs was "adamant" about Busch racing JGR cars during the Nationwide series, which he feels will give him a better chance to win.

"So I will be rejoining forces here and running about 25 races and then filling out the rest of the races with some younger talent in the non-companion races," Busch said.

Busch said he feels comfortable working for Gibbs, which made the decision to return fairly easy. Of course, the lucrative contract didn't hurt either.

"The good news is we signed him to a long-term deal, the bad news is we now work for him ? and we're broke," Gibbs joked.

With Matt Kenseth joining Busch and Denny Hamlin on the Sprint Cup Series, Gibbs said this is the most excited he's been entering a season.

He expects his Sprint Cup team to be competitive every week and also is excited about the prospect of running four cars on the Nationwide Series with Brian Vickers joining Kenseth, Busch and Hamlin.

While his drivers are friends and teammates, Gibbs said he expects some of that to wear off when February arrives.

"I was thinking this whole offseason they got along great and everything, but that's going to last until about the first time they get alongside each other up front," Gibbs said. "And I'm going to be ducking and dodging. All of these guys driving for us, we know each one is going to be going after (a championship)."

The good-natured jabs heated up at Thursday's Sprint Cup Series media day.

While on stage with his teammates, Busch was asked when Hamlin will get to sign a long-term extension with JGR.

"Well, we already gave him all of the best stuff," Busch cracked. "He had the fastest Toyota car down at Daytona in testing. What else do we gotta do? He's already got all of the good stuff."

Hamlin jabbed back, "I make up for it in talent."

Hamlin admittedly is a little sleep-deprived of late. He and his longtime girlfriend, Jordan Fish, welcomed their first child, a daughter named Taylor James Hamlin, born on Jan. 20 at 8:20 p.m. (20:20 military time) and she was 20 inches long.

"We squelched the rumor that Denny will now be driving the No. 20 car," joked JGR president J.D. Gibbs.

Kenseth brings a winning resume to Gibbs Racing. A two-time Daytona 500 winner and the 2003 Sprint Cup champion, Kenseth has won 24 Cup races including three last year for Roush Fenway Racing.

"It sounds like Kyle and Denny are already tied for the championship this year, but I'm looking forward to this anyway," Kenseth joked as he looked over at his teammates. He called it a "new beginning" and said sometimes change is good.

"I feel like it's a great opportunity to go and hopefully compete for some wins and try to compete for a championship," Kenseth said.

Said Gibbs: "It's great having Matt on board. He's somebody that we all respect. It's a thrill for us to have him."

Oil gets boost from China, US economic reports

The price of oil rose Thursday on positive economic news from the U.S. and China.

Benchmark oil gained 72 cents to finish at $95.95 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange in morning trading.

There are signs that oil demand is picking up in China. HSBC's monthly purchasing managers' index, which gauges manufacturing activity in China, rose for the fifth consecutive month in January to 51.9 from December's 51.5. Readings above 50 indicate expansion. More manufacturing means more energy consumption, which should push oil prices higher.

In the U.S., the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in five years, evidence that employers are cutting fewer jobs and may step up hiring.

Drivers doing the daily commute to work saw pump prices rise slightly overnight to an average of $3.32 a gallon. That's up 3 cents from a week ago.

The Energy Information Administration said oil supplies rose by 2.8 million barrels last week, more than analysts expected. That pushed oil stockpiles to 363.1 million barrels, up 8.5 percent from year-ago levels. But gasoline supplies dropped by 1.7 million barrels as demand rose and refineries slowed down, according to the Energy Department's statistical arm. Analysts had been expecting an increase in gasoline stocks.

On Wednesday, oil dropped by $1.45 per barrel after crude shipments through the Seaway pipeline from Cushing, Okla., to refineries on the Gulf Coast had to be cut to less than half because of limited capacity. Supplies of benchmark crude at the crucial Cushing hub remain at the highest level in 20 years. That's expected to fall as the pipeline carries more crude.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, rose 48 cents to end at $113.28 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 3 cents to finish at $2.86 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 11 cents to end at $3.45 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil added less than a penny to finish at $3.09 a gallon.

Secrets of a mentor to future CEOs ? Business Management Daily ...

In his 15 years as CEO of ICICI Bank, K.V. Kamath says he spent 30% of his time mentoring employees. The 65-year-old native of India views mentoring as a natural part of communicating with high-potential subordinates.

When Kamath became the bank?s CEO in 1996, he inherited a pool of young managers who lacked the seasoning to step into senior roles.

?I had to watch for talent and once I spotted it, provide them opportunities to grow,? Kamath says. ?Once they had reached a senior level, I then needed to rotate them through different areas so their talents were rounded.?

For Kamath, mentoring involves guiding people to set more ambitious goals. He likes to give mentees hard-to-reach targets along with the confidence to attain them.

One of his prot?g?s, Shikha Sharma, recalls that Kamath wanted her to help grow an ICICI business unit to become the dominant market leader. Sharma admits she never would have dreamed up such an audacious goal on her own?much less achieve it. She?s now CEO of Axis Bank in India. Mentoring typically involves doling out lots of advice. But Kamath doesn?t give much feedback; instead, he signals satisfaction by rotating the individual through a series of increasingly high-profile assignments.

Kamath seeks to limit his working relationship with mentees. He holds short, business-oriented meetings with them. He prefers to remain distant rather than forge personal bonds.

?I don?t believe a mentor and mentee should have a confiding relationship,? he explains. ?If you concern yourself with their personal life, the relationship can get unmanageable.?

Finally, Kamath likes to see mentees show initiative. When one of them made bold procedural changes in one of ICICI?s regional business units, Kamath asked, ?Who gave you permission to make such big moves?? When the mentee replied, ?No one. I decided on my own,? Kamath said, ?That?s exactly what I wanted to hear.?

Amazon Gets Into Voice Recognition, Buys Ivona Software To ...

Amazon today announced that it is acquiring Ivona Software, a Polish-based specialist in voice technologies that competes with Nuance and is already used in the Kindle Fire for services covering text-to-speech, voice commands and ?Explore by Touch.? The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The move is significant for a couple of reasons. First, it shows that Amazon is looking to enhance its features and functionality on its devices, moving ever further away from pared-down, cheaper hardware to compete better against products like the iPad and higher-spec tablets from the likes of Samsung.

Second, it paves the way for Amazon to do more in hardware beyond tablets. Specifically, adding voice services points further to a mobile handset/smartphone, as many have suspected Amazon would eventually launch. No comment on a phone specifically in today?s statements, but an intentionally vague reference to future products that is sure to send imaginations racing:

?IVONA?s exceptional text-to-speech technology leads the industry in natural voice quality, accuracy and ease of use. IVONA is already instrumental in helping us deliver excellent accessibility features on Kindle Fire, including Text-to-Speech, Voice Guide and Explore by Touch,? said Dave Limp, Vice President, Amazon Kindle, in a statement. ?The IVONA team shares our passion for innovation and customer obsession, and we?look forward to building great products to deliver world-class voice solutions to customers around the world.?

Although Amazon?s use of voice recognition today isn?t as highlighted and center-stage as Siri is in Apple?s iOS, it?s nevertheless an important part of the company?s business proposition, since a cornerstone of Amazon?s content is based in reading and ?reading? in different formats, like audiobooks. Here is what one of the voice features looks like currently on the Kindle Fire:

amazon voice feature

Ivona?s products, the company says, are already available for 44 voices in 17 languages ?and more in development?, which points to how Amazon can use the technology to underpin its international ambitions. Over the last year, the company has been ramping up products and Kindle stores for countries outside of the U.S., including finally launching the Kindle Fire tablets internationally.

What?s still unclear is how Ivona?s existing business will develop. We?re contacting Ivona to ask the question and will update as we learn more, but currently, Ivona works with other organizations and businesses, to provide voice recognition, and it has also made a big push on growing its developer ecosystem. Unless Amazon decides to take Ivona in-house completely, and use its tech exclusively in its own products, this presents a couple of opportunities.

It could see Amazon offering out the speech recognition capability in the form of an API, something that Apple has yet to do with Siri, for developers to use in their apps for the Kindle Fire and other platforms. (Amazon is doing a lot to court developers and continues to extend the ways in which to link them into its own platform.)

Ivona could potentially also get used by Amazon in its wider suite of enterprise, cloud-based services, which also includes hosting and other data management via Amazon Web Services.

Update: An Amazon spokesperson had this to say, confirming that Ivona will continue to work with third parties, meaning that this provides another bridge out for Amazon both to enterprise cloud services as well as to developers, specifically in the area of voice recognition: ?Yes ? IVONA will continue to provide voice solutions for our Kindle Fire tablets (text-to-speech, voice guide, explore-by-touch) and also continue to distribute their products and services to developers, businesses and customers around the world.?

Release below.

GLEN ROCK, New Jersey et PETAH TIKVA , Israel, January 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ ?

Tandis que la tendance ??Bring Your Own Device??
