Deciding Which State To Incorporate A Business - Small Business ...

After you decide to incorporate your business and choose a business structure, you need to decide which state to incorporate your business in. This means that, as part of the process?of forming a legal entity for your business, you need to choose a state to incorporate?in and which to make your filing in.

Many people want to know, ?What is the best state state to incorporate?a business?? Or ?Can I save money on taxes by incorporating my business in a different state??

State To Incorporate

Even though a business can be legally based in any state, even if that state is different from the owner?s state of residence, most business owners choose to incorporate in their own home state, or Delaware or Nevada.

Delaware is a popular?state to incorporate in, especially for larger companies, because it has the most developed and flexible corporate statutes in the country and is widely considered to be a pro-business state.

Nevada has also become popular state to incorporate?because of its lack of state corporate income tax, franchise tax and personal income tax. It also has relatively low fees.

However, most small business owners are likely better off incorporating in their own home state. If you are going to be conducting a substantial amount of your business in your home state, it will likely be beneficial to choose that?state to incorporate in.

Even if you incorporate out-of-state, if you do a lot of business in your home state (and/or have a significant physical presence in your home state), you will have to make a filing to ?qualify to do business? in your home state. You will then be subject to the same fees, taxes and regulations as if you had incorporated in your home state in the first place, and you will have paid filing fees (and, perhaps franchise taxes) to more than one state.

Sometimes it pays to keep it simple when you?re incorporating (and?avoid some of the most common incorporation mistakes). Big corporations can often find certain shortcuts that are not available to smaller businesses. Often the simplest answer ? the best?state to incorporate?in is your home state ? the right one for your small business. For more details on this, read Nellie Akalp?s article on Small Business Trends on?where is the ?best state? to incorporate.

If you?re operating a business in multiple states, then your incorporation and business filing requirements get a bit more complicated. For details, read this article from Small Business Trends on?how to handle your business filings when doing business in multiple states.

The bottom line: If your business is like most small businesses, you should probably choose the state where you live as the?state to incorporate.

While there can be benefits to incorporating out-of-state, those benefits usually are biggest for larger companies that have more complex tax filing and regulatory situations. Small business owners who do a majority of business in the same state should usually plan to ?keep it simple? by incorporating in the same state where they reside.

Are You an Agile Leader? - PM Hut

October 27, 2012 | Author: PM Hut | Filed under: Leadership

Are You an Agile Leader?
By Terri L Hughes

It?s the ability to lead well through a wide range of circumstances - especially when leading change. You can spot an agile leader because they are flexible, balanced, quick, graceful, and able to work effectively with uncertainty and ambiguity.

Here are some of my favorite definitions of agility with respect to leadership:

  • Capacity to be flexible and resourceful in the face of ever-changing conditions
  • The ability to move with an easy grace

  • The ability to weave together and make sense of apparently disjointed pieces, crafting innovative solutions

  • Ability to change position rapidly and accurately without losing balance

One thing we know for sure? business change is here to stay. If businesses want to succeed at managing at the pace of change ?change management? may have much more to do with improving how we lead than about managing the change. And that?s where the skill of agility comes in.

Many of the leaders I work with struggle with leading change effectively. They talk about change and more change to come, but their most important business outcomes rely on creating innovative new products, or creating a cultural shift to enable their success. If we consider the desired outcomes, then their focus should include a variety of ideas and approaches to be sure people are engaged in doing those things that will create the valuable results - not simply on trying to manage the changes.

So instead of relying on a linear set of academic change steps, an agile leader will address the situation with a variety of perspectives, ideas and solutions. They try different approaches, and move gracefully with the needs.

Ana Dutra, CEO of Korn/Ferry Leadership and Talent Consulting summed it up beautifully by noting in Forbes (April 2011), ?Agile Leaders are those who ?figure it out?, who ?get it?, when faced with new and challenging situations. Agile Leaders are not only fast and effective problem solvers when dealing with situations they?ve never dealt with before, but they are also laser-focused on results and excellent at reshaping plans and priorities when faced with unexpected changes in the environment. They are resourceful and competitive. And, they get it done fast.

Agile leaders are not only exceptional at coping with change, but also in driving it, many times anticipating market trends or, even better, creating new trends. They have high tolerance for ambiguity and are actually thrilled by the possibility of creating the new and different. Most importantly, not only do agile leaders have all the above characteristics, but they also possess a high dose of self-awareness and awareness of others.?

Try these seven ideas to begin improving your leadership agility:

  1. Watch out for limiting beliefs and reactive tendencies - Review your mental scripts and how they inform your behaviors
  2. Don?t be limited by one approach - Take a hard look at your style and see how adaptable you are in various situations

  3. Surprise yourself with breakthrough thinking and involvement of others - intentionally take yourself out of your comfort zone and explore new approaches

  4. Ask better questions - be willing to examine all facets of a situation to create success

  5. Imagine you get replaced today- How would your successor improve things?

  6. Anticipate change in everything you do

  7. Hire a great coach!

?When you?re finished changing? You?re finished?. - Benjamin Franklin

Technology helping to crack oldest undeciphered writing system

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? New technology has allowed researchers to come closer than ever to cracking the world's oldest undeciphered writing system.

Researchers from the University of Oxford and the University of Southampton have developed a Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) System for Ancient Documentary Artefacts (funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation) to capture images of some of the world's most important historical documents. Recently this system was used on objects held in the vaults of the Louvre Museum in Paris.

These images have now been made available online for free public access on the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative website.

Among the documents are manuscripts written in the so-called proto-Elamite writing system used in ancient Iran from 3,200 to 3,000 BC and which is the oldest undeciphered writing system currently known. By viewing extremely high quality images of these documents, and by sharing them with a community of scholars worldwide, the Oxford University team hope to crack the code once and for all.

Dr Jacob Dahl, a co-leader of the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative and a member of Oxford University's Faculty of Oriental Studies, said: 'I have spent the last ten years trying to decipher the proto-Elamite writing system and, with this new technology, I think we are finally on the point of making a breakthrough.

'The quality of the images captured is incredible. And it is important to remember that you cannot decipher a writing system without having reliable images because you will, for example, overlook differences barely visible to the naked eye which may have meaning. Consider for example not being able to distinguish the letter i from the letter t.'

The reflectance transformation imaging technology system designed by staff in the Archaeological Computing Research Group and Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton comprises a dome with 76 lights and a camera positioned at the top of the dome. The manuscript is placed in the centre of the dome, whereafter 76 photos are taken each with one of the 76 lights individually lit. In post-processing the 76 images are joined so that the researcher can move the light across the surface of the digital image and use the difference between light and shadow to highlight never-before-seen details.

'We have never been able to view documents in this quality before,' Dr Dahl explained.

Dr Dahl believes this writing system might be even more interesting than previously thought. He said: 'Looking at contemporary and later writing systems, we would expect to see proto-Elamite use only symbols to represent things, but we think they also used a syllabary -- for example 'cat' would not be represented by a symbol depicting the animal but by symbols for the otherwise unrelated words 'ca' and 'at'.

'Half of the signs used in this way seem to have been invented ex novo for the sounds they represent -- if this turns out to be the case, it would transform fundamentally how we understand early writing where phonetecism is believed to have been developed through the so-called rebus principle (a modern example would be for example "I see you," written with the three signs 'eye', the 'sea', and a 'ewe').'

Some features of the writing system are already known. The scribes had loaned -- or potentially shared -- some signs from/with Mesopotamia, such as the numerical signs and their systems and signs for objects like sheep, goats, cereals and some others. Nevertheless, 80-90% of the signs remain undeciphered.

The writing system died out after only a couple centuries. Dr Dahl said: 'It was used in administration and for agricultural records but it was not used in schools -- the lack of a scholarly tradition meant that a lot of mistakes were made and the writing system may eventually have become useless as an administrative system. Eventually, the system was abandoned after some two hundred years.'

Dr Dahl joked: 'This is probably the world's first case of a collapse of knowledge because of the under-funding of education!'

The Louvre gave the researchers access to the c. 1100 proto-Elamite tablets in its collections, half of which can now be viewed on the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative website.

Dr Dahl said: 'The Louvre collection of early writing from Mesopotamia and Iran is incredibly important -- it contains the first substantial law code, the first record of a battle between kings, the first propaganda, and the first literature. Being able to put these documents online would be a great achievement.'

Dr Dahl said making important documents from early human history publicly accessible is becoming increasingly important, both as a consequence of the ever-expanding influence of cyberscholarship in academic research, but also in many cases more pressingly as a matter of cultural heritage preservation in areas of the world threatened by armed conflict and collapse of security.

'Iraq's cultural heritage has been pillaged in the last 20 years, and the situation in neighbouring Syria is looking dire as well,' he said.

Protecting the Child Tax Credit as fiscal cliff looms near

A crucial safety net for low- and moderate-income families is jeopardized as the nation hurtles towards the fiscal cliff, Maag writes.

By Elaine Maag,?Guest blogger / October 25, 2012

Tax payers search through tax forms at the Illinois Department of Revenue in Springfield, Ill., in this April 2010 file photo. As the nation approaches a fiscal cliff, the future of the Child Tax Credit is in question, Maag writes.

The Child Tax Credit (CTC), a key piece of the safety net for low- and moderate-income families, is in jeopardy as the nation hurtles towards the fiscal cliff. Not only could the 2001 expansion of the credit die, but so could provisions in the 2009 stimulus that made the credit much more available to low-income families.

My biggest fear is that Congress will cut a year-end deal that extends the 2001 expansion but lets the important 2009 changes die.

To explain what?s happening, here is a bit of history: Prior to 2001, the credit was $500 per child. Families whose credit exceeded the income tax they owed could get the balance as a refundable credit only if they had at least three children and paid enough payroll tax. The credit phased out for single parents with income over $75,000 and married couples with income over $110,000.

The 2001 act doubled the credit to $1,000 per child and broadened its refundability. Families could receive 15 cents of their credit for each dollar of earnings over $10,000. (The threshold was indexed for inflation and would be about $13,000 in 2013.) Stimulus legislation in 2008 and 2009 reduced the threshold to $8,500 and then to $3,000. The more generous refundability level enacted in 2009 is critically important for low-income families.

Of the $38.3 billion in total child credits that TPC estimates families will claim this year, $29.5 billion comes from the 2001 tax law and another $8.8 billion from the 2009 stimulus. Most of the 2001 increase will go to families in the middle income quintile and higher (see chart). Families with the lowest incomes will get less than 3 percent of the 2001 increase. In contrast, fully 60 percent of the benefits from the 2009 changes will go to families in the lowest income quintile.

As we near the fiscal cliff, Congress should keep in mind the entire package of CTC changes, noting that the 2009 ARRA changes matter most for very low-income families.

Googler Offers Search Marketing Tips for Small, Local Businesses

When it comes to online advertising, Google is king. When it comes to search marketing in particular, Google has no peer. While nearly every major company in the U.S. has now invested advertising dollars into internet marketing, smaller businesses can easily run into roadblock if they don?t have the expertise or personel to implement a successful strategy in this brand new world of marketing.

This Wednesday, Bright Park, strategic partner development manager at Google, spoke to a crowd of small business owners at a sales conference in Lexington, KY. The conference was sponsored by local NBC TV station affiliate LEX 18, a Google strategic partner that offers digital marketing services to local businesses. WebProNews attended the event, and was able to speak with conference attendees about how they are incorporating digital marketing into their sales strategies.

The presentation comes just after Google CPC was shown to have?fallen in the third quarter?of 2013. In fact, current online advertisers may be diversifying their ad spending to social media or other search engines, such as Yahoo Bing. This makes the potential customers Park was addressing all the more important.

Park began by providing some statistics on just how quickly the online world is growing, such as the fact that 5 billion people are predicted to be online by 2020. ?From the dawn of civilization to the year 2003, mankind had created a total of five?exabytes?of data,? said Park. ?Now, in the year 2012, it?s estimated that five exabytes of data are created every two days.?

Pointing out that mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, are now becoming ubiquitous, Park showed how search traffic often spikes when live events happen on television. ?In short, if you?re advertising on television, you have to be discoverable online,? said Park.

Park did, though, give a few tips for small business on how they can ?win? that zero moment. The first tip was to put someone in charge of search marketing. Preferably, this is someone who knows the internet well, but Park admits that new world of digital advertising can be overwhelming. ?Quite frankly, it can be complicated and time consuming to figure out a search engine marketing campaign,? said Park.

Though Park didn?t state it directly, this is undoubtedly where Google resell partners such as LEX 18 come in, offering simplified online marketing packages for small business owners.

A look at earnings from the major airlines

The major U.S. airlines reported third-quarter earnings over the past two weeks. The quarter included a good chunk of the busy summer season but also incorporated one of the weakest months ? September. The airlines continued to face high fuel costs. They raised some fares in response, but still offered deals to keep planes full. And both business travelers and leisure travelers faced headwinds from slow economic growth and high unemployment.

Here is a summary of earnings reports from United Continental Holdings Corp., Delta Air Lines Inc., US Airways Group Inc., AMR Corp., parent of American Airlines, and Southwest Airlines Co.

? Oct. 25. United Continental's profit shrunk to $6 million from $653 million a year ago. Quarterly revenue fell for the first time since the last three months of 2009 as fewer passengers flew on United. The world's biggest airline also took a charge of $454 related to a contract agreement with its pilots. The integration of Continental Airlines hasn't gone as smoothly as hoped following a 2010 merger.

? Oct. 24. Delta earned $1 billion in the third quarter, almost double from a year ago. Delta has been posting gains in per-passenger revenue ? a key measure of airline performance ? that have been higher than other airlines, and is aiming to cut fuel costs by purchasing an oil refinery near Philadelphia. Delta is making other moves to cut costs. It wants to shift to bigger planes to reduce maintenance spending and to give passengers a better flying experience.

? Oct. 24. US Airways posted record net income of $245 million, or $1.24 per share. Revenue rose 3 percent to $3.53 billion. The nation's fifth-biggest airline predicted that revenue per mile will rise roughly 3 percent over last year for the final three months of 2012. The results are important as US Airways pursues a merger with American Airlines, which is reorganizing under bankruptcy protection.

? Oct. 17. Southwest Airlines posted a profit of 2 cents per share, compared with a loss of 18 cents a year earlier. Revenue was lighter than the company expected. CEO Gary Kelly told CNBC that Southwest saw some "softness" in business travel and that demand weakened in September. It's possible that slowdown is over, however. Kelly said a key measure of revenue is 4 percent higher this month than in October 2011.

? Oct. 16. American Airlines parent AMR Corp. reported a quarterly loss of $238 million due to costs related to its restructuring in bankruptcy court. But the nation's No. 3 airline said its operating performance was strong. It made more money per passenger and flights were fuller than in any previous quarter. American was plagued by delays and cancellations in September, but said those didn't have a significant impact on its bottom line.

Save Time and Money on Your Commute by Joining a Vanpool

Save Time and Money on Your Commute by Joining a VanpoolDid you know you can save hundreds of dollars and practically eliminate the stress of commuting by joining a vanpool? A vanpool is like a carpool except usually an organization (your company, a municipality, non-profit organization, etc.) provides the van for the riders.

My Money Blog outlines how the system works. Essentially, each rider pays a low monthly fare, which covers the cost of fuel, tolls, and van maintenance. Riders save on the cost of fuel alone and you might even be able to get a tax break if your employer offers a pre-tax payroll deduction for using mass transit. Besides the cost savings, using a vanpool has the same benefits as carpooling: less stress, reducing your carbon footprint, and time savings when you use the faster HOV lane.

Even better: If you're the driver, you pay nothing at all.

See the post on My Money Blog for more details and links to programs in different communities.

Colgate to cut 6 pct of workforce in 4 years

NEW YORK (AP) ? Colgate-Palmolive will cut more than 2,310 workers, or 6 percent of its workforce, by the end of 2016 in a push to make the consumer products company more efficient.

Colgate, which is based in New York and has 38,600 employees, wants to streamline global functions and said Thursday that it will continue to cluster single-country subsidiaries into regional hubs.

Savings for the program should total between $365 million to $435 million annually by end of 2016.

The cuts were announced on the same day that the company posted a 2 percent increase in third-quarter net income as it ramps up advertising. Revenue slipped 1 percent.

Consumer product companies like Colgate-Palmolive have increasingly looked outside of the U.S. to sustain growth but that has become problematic in recent years. Half of the nations in the European Union are in recession, with unemployment nearing 25 percent in some. Even China's red-hot economy has cooled.

The stronger dollar is also hitting all companies that do business globally, with U.S. products growing more expensive at the same time that they've had to raise prices to offset higher costs for raw materials.

Colgate-Palmolive's top rival, Procter & Gamble, reported Thursday that its first-quarter net income fell 7 percent, as costs related to restructuring and the stronger dollar weighed on results. Kimberly-Clark reported Wednesday that its net income rose 20 percent, helped by cost cuts and lower costs for commodities like fiber and other raw materials.

"We are living in a fast-changing world with many challenges including slowing economies in many countries," said Ian Cook, Colgate-Palmolive's chairman and CEO. "This program will help us to move forward from our current position of strength to continue to deliver sustained, profitable growth over the long term."

The company wants to expand its online capabilities including mobile and social media and e-commerce. It's also investing in research and product development to ensure a "robust pipeline of new products." It also plans to seize emerging markets with targeted programs to increase consumer loyalty and expand distribution.

Colgate-Palmolive reported net income of $654 million, or $1.36 per share for the three-month period ended Sept. 30. That compares with $643 million, or 1.31 per share in the year-ago period.

Revenue slipped 1 percent to $4.33 billion from $4.38 billion.

Analysts had expected $1.38 per share on revenue of $4.38 billion, according to a poll by analysts.

Scientists say the hole in this protective ozone layer mainly is caused by chlorine from man-made chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were created in the early 20th century and used in products like spray cans. CFCs, which destroy ozone, are believed to linger in the stratosphere for decades.

Air temperature can affect the rate at which these CFCs break apart ozone molecules. Years with large ozone holes are generally associated with very cold winters over Antarctica and high polar winds, the scientists say.

Researchers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the gouge, which forms in September and October, was smaller this year because of warmer air temperatures high above?the South Pole.

"It happened to be a bit warmer this year high in the atmosphere above Antarctica, and that meant we didn't see quite as much ozone depletion as we saw last year, when it was colder," said Jim Butler with NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colo.

The Antarctic ozone hole was first discovered in the late 1970s. The gash continued to grow steadily during the 1980s and 90s, though since early 2000 the growth reportedly leveled off. Scientists, however, have seen?large variability in its size?from year to year.

Although the production of ozone-depleting chemicals has been regulated for the past 25 years, scientists say it could be another decade before we start seeing early signs of Antarctic?ozone layer recovery. NASA atmospheric chemist Paul Newman has estimated that the ozone layer above Antarctica likely will not return to its early 1980s state until about 2060.

Moon formed from humongous Earth collision, new theories attempt to explain

The new research potentially plugs a big hole in the giant impact theory, long the leading explanation for the moon's formation.

By Mike Wall,?SPACE.com / October 18, 2012

This artist's conception of a planetary smashup whose debris was spotted by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope three years ago gives an impression of the carnage that would have been wrecked when a similar impact created Earth's Moon. A team at Washington University in St. Louis has uncovered evidence of this impact that scientists have been trying to find for more than 30 years.

NASA/JPL-Caltech

The moon did indeed coalesce out of tiny bits of pulverized planet blasted into space by a catastrophic collision 4.5 billion years ago, two new studies suggest.

The new research potentially plugs a big hole in the?giant impact theory, long the leading explanation for the moon's formation. Previous versions of the theory held that the moon formed primarily from pieces of a mysterious Mars-size body that slammed into a proto-Earth ? but that presented a problem, because scientists know that the moon and Earth are made of the same stuff.

The two studies both explain how Earth and?the moon?came to be geochemical twins. However, they offer differing versions of the enormous smashup that apparently created Earth's natural satellite, giving scientists plenty to chew on going forward.

A fast-spinning Earth

One of the studies ? by Matija Cuk of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute in Mountain View, Calif., and Sarah Stewart of Harvard ? suggests the answer lies in Earth's rotation rate. [Video: New Ideas About the Moon-Forming Impact]

If Earth's day had been just two to three hours long at the time of the impact, Cuk and Stewart calculate, the planet could well have thrown off enough material to?form the moon?(which is 1.2 percent as massive as Earth).

This rotational speed might sound incredible, and indeed it's close to the threshold beyond which the planet would begin to fly apart. But researchers say the early?solar system?was a "shooting gallery" marked by many large impacts, which could have spun planets up to enormous speeds.

Cuk and Stewart's study, which appears online today (Oct. 17) in the journal Science, also provides a mechanism by which Earth's rotation rate could have slowed over time.

After the collision, a gravitational interaction between Earth's orbit around the sun and the moon's orbit around Earth could have put the brakes on the planet's super-spin, eventually producing a 24-hour day, the scientists determined.

A bigger impactor

Cuk and Stewart's version of the cosmic smashup posits a roughly Mars-size impactor ? a body with 5 percent to 10 percent the mass of Earth. However, the other new study ? being published in the same issue of Science today ? envisions a collision between two planets in the same weight class.

"In this impact, the impactor and the target each contain about 50 percent of the [present] Earth's mass," Robin Canup, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., told SPACE.com via email.

"This type of impact has not been advocated for the Earth-moon before (although a similar type of collision has been invoked for the origin of the Pluto-Charon pair)," Canup added, referring to the largest moon of Pluto.

In her computer models, the symmetry of this collision caused the resulting moon-forming debris disk to be nearly identical in composition to the mantle of the newly enlarged Earth.

Canup's models further predict that such an impact would significantly increase Earth's rotational speed. But that may not be a big issue, since Cuk and Stewart's work explains how Earth's spin could have slowed over time.

A third study, published today in the journal Nature, determined that huge amounts of?water boiled away?during the moon's birth. The finding, made by examining moon rocks brought back to Earth by Apollo astronauts, further bolsters the broad outlines of the giant impact theory.

Though the gigantic smashup occurred 4.5 billion years ago, scientists may one day be able to piece together in detail how it all went down, Canup said.

"Models of terrestrial planet assembly should be able to evaluate the relative probability of, e.g., the collision I advocate vs. the one proposed by Cuk and Stewart," she said.

Buzzard oilfield yet to restart; more Forties delays seen

LONDON (Reuters) - The restart of Britain's largest oilfield after a maintenance shutdown has slipped further, trade sources said on Thursday, in what may further impact shipments of the oil that sets the Brent benchmark.

The Buzzard field in the North Sea, the largest of the fields contributing to the Forties crude blend which underpins the Brent contract, is expected to restart in the next couple of days, the source said, not October 25 or 26 as previously thought.

A series of delays in the restart of the field has disrupted shipments of Forties crude, leading to an increase in the premium in the price of Brent oil for immediate delivery, and frustrating buyers and sellers of the crude.

"Not yet," the source said, asked if the field had restarted. "Next couple of days." A second source, familiar with Forties production, said the restart was expected by Monday.

The timescales from the trade sources differ from an official statement from Canadian oil company Nexen, Buzzard's operator, in its third-quarter earnings statement on Thursday.

"We are in the process of restarting the platform, and expect production to ramp up in the next week to 10 days," Calgary-based Nexen said.

Buzzard has been shut since September 4 and prolonged work at the field has contributed to delays in all 16 of the Forties cargoes due to be loaded in October. So far, one November shipment has been cancelled and two delayed.

One Forties trader was expecting details of further cargo delays to emerge in the next few days.

A loss of Buzzard output for just a few days can have a significant impact on Forties loadings since the field pumps 200,000 barrels per day (bpd), enough to fill a Forties cargo every three days.

Restarting North Sea installations often takes longer than expected due to problems including bad weather and the emergence of unexpected engineering and technical issues.

Are American Airlines' new Boeing 777-300ERs going to be late into ...

We?re hearing that American Airlines is having the problems with its soon-to-arrive Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. In particular, we?re hearing that the problems are with the fancy first-class seats being built in Great Britain.

If so, that would threatened the aircraft?s planned entry into service in American?s schedule, on the Dallas/Fort Worth-Sao Paulo, Brazil, route beginning Dec. 13.

We talked Tuesday to American?s chief commercial officer Virasb Vahidi about American?s plan to launch some new international routes. While we had him on the phone, we also asked if American had solved the problem with the first-class seats, whether American would be able to put the airplane into service as planned.

His reply: ?Well, stay tuned. We?re probably pretty close to making an announcement on the exact entry into service of that aircraft very soon.?

We pointed out that American had already announced that 777-300ER would begin flying the DFW-Sao Paulo route on Dec. 13.

His reply: ?That is our current stance or current position and that?s what?s in the GDS?s or the CRS?s and that?s what the plan is as?of right now. That?s correct.? (GDS=Global distribution systems, CRS=computerized reservations systems.)

We asked whether that start date is in jeopardy.

His reply: ?That is the stake in the ground and plan of record as of right now. If that changes, we?ll let everyone know, including our customers.?

At that point, a public relations person interrupted to say that Virasb had other interviews he needed to do, and that ended the questioning.

When it goes into service, the 777-300ER will be the biggest aircraft that American operates. It has, if we counted right, 310 seats, compared to the 777-200?s 247 seats. The 777-200 currently flies the D/FW-Sao Paulo route, as well as a number of other important international routes.

American has 14 announced orders for the 777-300ER, with two to arrive this year, eight coming in 2013 and four more in 2014.

On Nov. 30, 2011, American announced the details of the 777-300ER?s interior, and made much of the first-class seats:

?Considered one of the most comfortable and popular First Class seats in the industry, the 777-300 will feature an updated and enhanced version of the customer-favorite Flagship Suite seat that transforms into a fully lie flat six-foot, eight-inch bed with drop-down armrests that allow for easier access and more sleeping space.

?Each suite provides aisle access and allows customers to individually adjust any component of the seat for ultimate comfort. All suites will feature privacy dividers, two universal AC power outlets, one USB outlet, two large tray tables, a swivel seat and a host of other comforts, including Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headsets, designed to enhance the travel experience.

?A 17-inch touchscreen monitor will offer an array of entertainment and a touchscreen video handset will serve as a remote that allows customers to easily select programming without touching the monitor and watch additional video programs, such as the moving map, while viewing the 17-inch monitor. The First Class cabin will use updated interior trim and finishes to achieve a comfortable, modern feel throughout the cabin.?

At that time, American said London would be ?a first market? for the airplane. But on May 19, it announced that the D/FW-Sao Paulo route would get the first 777-300ER on Dec. 13, followed by D/FW-London on Jan. 31, New York-London in February, a second D/FW-London flight in March and New York-Sao Paulo in April.

Jobs, bayonets, 'apology tour': How to talk politics with your kids

Jobs, bayonets, and the "apology tour" may make your family a presidential debate arena of its own ? but how to talk politics with your kids is important to their development.? While we may want our kids to share our values, we can help them understand why we hold these values and that even people who disagree are not evil.

By Susan DeMersseman,?Guest Blogger / October 24, 2012

Jobs, bayonets, and the "apology tour" may divide adults over the presidential elections, but it's a teachable moment for our kids. Here, Sari Lewien poses with an image of President Obama at the CarolinaFest, a street festival for Convention delegates and their families, ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., last month.

It?s hard to protect our children from the barrage of political ads. In some homes the interest of the parent is so great that the ads and the political talk shows fill the air. On the other hand, this situation can be an important teachable moment for our children. While we might like our children to share our values, it is wise to also help them understand why we hold these values and that even?people who disagree with us are not necessarily evil.

Depending upon the age of the child we can start with the idea that people have different ideas about how to create a good community or solve problems. Even little ones can understand that people choose others to make decisions about what is good for our community. They can understand that by our vote we try to choose people we think will make good decisions. It?s important, in child terms, to communicate why we are choosing a certain candidate.?

Children already tend to see things in black and white, so a little effort at moderation may help them be aware of some of the shades of meaning in the political arena. We can help them see that people sometimes get angry and agitated, so much so that they don?t think about reasons, but that reasons for our choices are really important.

Since one of our children may choose another path or marry into a family with different political inclinations, it is good that they know how to respect the viewpoints of others and, when appropriate, to express their own viewpoints in a thoughtful and reasoned way.

Many of us have taken part in family events where our main challenge was biting our tongues. I believe this is one of those born-in temperamental qualities ? the ability to listen to what we consider utter nonsense and not call the speaker out. Even those not so predisposed can learn to hold their tongue when a pointless argument would ruin a family event. And if that can?t be achieved then our goal might be the ability to state a point and back it up with reasons ? reasons other than, "Your idea is utter nonsense."

It is equally important to help our children understand that many worthwhile goals can be accomplished outside the political arena. If our values lead us to care for those who are poor or disadvantaged, we can show our children by our actions that we as individuals can make a difference. We can donate or work at a food bank. We can gather books or clothing for children in need. We can visit senior centers with flowers, goodies and the time to listen.

Years ago there was a song from the musical "Hair" that was a good reminder. The line was, "Do you only care about the bleeding crowd? How about a needing friend?" Groups and movements do have power, but so do individuals in the many small steps that improve the lives of others near them.

Most of us have a needing friend, and if our children see us care for that friend, they might learn as much as they could from any political conversation.?

She would consider herself good at heart, but she does know that she can be a little bit lazy, and impatient, loud, annoying, etc.
- Dehlilah Dane: ? She can't really judge her, simply because she doesn't really now her. All she knows is that she is a cheerleader, and seems like your average ditsy blonde popular girl. At least, from Darcy's perspective, though they have never really spoken.

- Mike Ignate: ? | ? Mike is probably Darcy's closest friend, though that being said, she doesn't have many close friends. The only thing that bothers her is that he cares a lot about his reputation - meaning when his friends around he acts like an asshole and she is invisible. There is one other thing that bothers her, too - That she might be falling for him.
- Rosalynd Sorbie: ? | ? She would consider Rosalynd to be a friend, if even that. She knows her, and she is nice, but to be honest, she scares Darcy slightly. That being said, Darcy can't say she's very brave. The girls know each other, but aren't close. She respects Rosalyn and knows not to get on her bad side, and enjoys their little talks, but she wouldn't be her best friend.
