Netduino Plus 2 offers four times the speed, full round of futureproofing (video)

Netduino Plus 2 offers four times the speed, full round of futureproofing video

The original Netduino Plus was a welcome alternative for Arduino developers that had its limits -- even networking was almost a step too far. Secret Labs doesn't want any of us to bump our heads on the ceiling with its just-launched Netduino Plus 2. The networkable, .NET-friendly developer board runs a four times faster 168MHz processor with double the RAM (over 100KB) and six times as much code space (384KB) as its two-year-old ancestor. Having so much headroom lets the team build common OneWire and Time Server code into the firmware; Secret Labs reckons that there's enough space that the Plus 2 can easily grow over time. The ports are just as ready for the future with four serial ports, software control of any add-on shields (including Rev C Arduino shields) and a new header that lets programmers debug both managed and truly native code at once. If the upgrade is sufficiently tempting, project builders just need to spend $60 today to enjoy some newfound freedom.

Price Gouging Dings Consumers Amid Hurricane ... - Yahoo! Finance

Millions of Americans set out to buy emergency supplies in the days ahead of Hurricane Sandy.

Those buying essentials such as gas, food, water, batteries and generators expected to dip into their savings and spend more money than usual ? but they did not expect to overpay.

[Related: Hurricane Sandy: Economic Impact Could Exceed $10 Billion a Day]

Price gouging is a common occurrence during emergency situations. Retailers know that consumers who need products will be willing to pay more for them and take advantage.

On October 29, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman issued an open letter to vendors reminding them that it is illegal to gouge prices during abnormal disruption of markets.

"As Attorney General, it is my responsibility to enforce the price gouging law, and while it is my hope that I will not need to do so, my office is certainly prepared," he wrote. "We will review pricing data, and take such complaints filed with office seriously, as we do with any matter."

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie sent out similar warnings. In New Jersey it is illegal to raise prices by more than 10% during an emergency.

[Related: Atlantic City Casinos Shuttered Amid Sandy Fallout]

Despite these warnings, price gouging continues.

Matthew Hendershot, a resident of Brooklyn, experienced raised prices at the pump before Sandy. "I thought I would top off my gas tank to be safe before things got ugly," He told The Daily Ticker, "Prices for gas at this particular Getty just the other day were ranging from $4.09 to $4.29 for premium. This morning all of the prices had been set to $4.95 straight across the board, all grades and both the cash and charge payments. Usually the cash payment is ten cents less than if you pay with a card. So it seems pretty obvious that they just maxed out the price on everything to five bucks."

In North Carolina, District Attorney Roy Cooper has also put emergency price gouging laws into effect. "A crisis shouldn't be an excuse to rip off consumers," he says.

[Related: Hurricane Sandy: Pre-Storm Mayhem Hits NYC Whole Foods]

During Hurricane Ike, North Carolina suffered many cases of price gouging. Attorney General Cooper decided to investigate and prosecute and ended up issuing more than $70,000 in fines to gas stations alone.

It is important to remember that price gouging can also occur after the storm has ended.

"After any disaster like this hurricane, there are many scams around yard clean up and home repair," says Nancy Cahalen, president of the Better Business Bureau in Central New England. "Consumers are so eager to get help with these issues that they don't use the same good judgment the normally would when hiring folks."

"Stay calm, avoid letting your emotions get the best of you," she continues. "Don't let your emotions get in the way of making a decision, be selective and check backgrounds."

Exercise Could Improve Your Brain Functioning, Study Suggests

What's good for the body is good for the brain.

Findings presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress show the brain-boosting effects of just four months of exercise.

"It's reassuring to know that you can at least partially prevent that [cognitive] decline by exercising and losing weight," study researcher Dr. Martin Juneau, director of prevention of the Montreal Heart Institute, said in a statement.

The study included overweight and sedentary adults with an average age of 49. They underwent twice-weekly sessions of intense interval training for four weeks -- which included circuit weights and exercise bikes -- before and after which they underwent tests of their cognitive functioning, cardiac output, body composition and exercise tolerance and capacity.

By the end of the study, the researchers found that not only were the participants' body measurements all improved -- they also did better on the tests of cognitive functioning.

"At least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week can make a huge difference to manage risk factors for heart disease and stroke," Dr. Beth Abramson, spokesperson for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, said in a statement. "There are many benefits of exercise -- we know it can make us feel better. This suggests it can make us 'think better' as well."

Recently, a study in the journal Neurology showed that physical exercise trumps mental exercise in beating brain shrinkage (linked with memory problems and even Alzheimer's disease), HuffPost 50 reported.

For more ways exercising is good for mental health, click through the slideshow:

?

  • It Sharpens Thinking

Earlier this year, Dartmouth researchers <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/31/exercise-makes-you-smarter-adhd-research_n_1528383.html">added support to mounting evidence about the way that exercise affects learning</a> and mental acuity: it boosts the production of ?brain derived neurotrophic factor" -- or BDNF ? a protein that is thought to help with mental acuity, learning and memory.

  • It May Alleviate Childhood ADHD Symptoms

In the same Dartmouth study, the researchers discovered that, thanks to the BDNF boost, exercise also helped to <a href="http://www.wired.com/playbook/2012/05/exercise-memory-and-adhd/">alleviate ADHD-like symptoms in juvenile rats</a>. Since BDNF is involved in the brain's development and growth of new cells, the effect was more profound on the younger rats, with their still-developing brains and more rapid cell turnover, compared to adult rats.

  • It Helps You Learn New Tricks

Even one exercise session can help you retain physical skills by enhancing what's commonly known as "muscle memory" or "motor memory," according to <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3433433/">new research published in <em>PlosOne</em>.</a> <a href="http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/26/how-exercise-can-help-you-master-new-skills/">As the New York <em>Times</em> reported</a>, men who were taught to follow a complicated pattern on a computer and subsequently exercised were better able to remember the pattern in subsequent days than the men who didn't exercise after the initial squiggle test.

  • It Supports Problem-Solving

In one study, mice that exercised by running not only generated new neurons, but those neurons lit up when the mice performed unfamiliar tasks like <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/22/magazine/how-exercise-could-lead-to-a-better-brain.html?pagewanted=all">navigating a new environment</a>.

  • It Helps Alleviate Symptoms Of Depression

When you exercise, your pituitary gland releases endorphins to help mitigate the physical stress and pain you are experiencing. But those endorphins may play a more important and longer-lasting role: they could help alleviate symptoms of depression, <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/depression-and-exercise/MH00043">according to a Mayo Clinic report</a>.

  • It Reduces Stress

Although exercising raises our levels of cortisol -- the hormone that causes physical stress and is even associated with long-term memory impairment -- its overall effect is one of a stress reducer. That's because exercise increases the <a href="http://www.hormones.gr/57/article/article.html">body's threshold for cortisol</a>, making you more inured to stressors.

  • It Helps Delay Age-Associated Memory Loss

As we get older, an area of the brain called the hippocampus shrinks. That's why age is associated with memory loss across the board. However, profound memory loss -- such as in dementia and Alzheimer's disease patients -- is also contributed to by accelerated hippocampus shrinking. Luckily, the hippocampus is also an area of the brain that generate new neurons throughout a lifespan. And, <a href="http://www.npr.org/2011/02/21/133777018/aerobic-exercise-may-improve-memory-in-seniors">the research shows</a>, exercise promotes new neural growth in this area.

Officials: CIA head in Egypt for security talks

CAIRO (AP) ? United States Central Intelligence Director David Petraeus began a two-day mission to Cairo on Wednesday for a two-day visit for security and counter-terrorism talks, Egyptian officials said.

Petraeus is leading a U.S. delegation that will meet with top Egyptian security officials to exchange information about combating terrorism, the officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters. A U.S. Embassy spokesman declined to give information about the visit.

The visit comes as Egypt is clamping down on suspected militants.

Last week, Egyptian security forces identified a Libyan militant, killed after detonating a bomb during a raid, as suspected of links to the deadly attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi on Sept. 11 which left four Americans dead, including the U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Egypt's Interior Ministry said in a detailed report on Wednesday that it has detained 13 militants suspected of planning operations to destabilize the country in a series of raids. A ministry statement said most had large amounts of explosives and that the raids took place in different areas of Egypt over recent weeks. A Tunisian was among those arrested in a raid last week.

After the fall of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi after eight-month conflict last year, Libya's political and security vacuum has fueled cross border smuggling of weapons and militants, through Egyptian territories to Gaza Strip.
