Belk held a ribbon cutting for its new distribution center in Union County, where the unemployment rate is 14.3 percent.
Starting July 9, shoppers buying from the department store's website will get their merchandise directly from the Jonesville facility. For now, the distribution center will fill orders for shoes and household merchandise.
The facility used to be home to Disney, which moved out in July 2011.
Belk swooped in, taking over the big box and hiring many of the employees who lost their jobs.
"It's been all about looking for a facility and getting it up and running, which we did in five months, when most people would take 12 to 18," said Debby Fortnum, vice president of supply chain for Belk. "The people we've hired here in Union County have been amazing. Most of them are former Disney employees. They have great experience, lots of skills and tremendous motivation."
The $4.5 million investment will employ 124 people over the next five years.
"The industry is growing very fast. We're growing very strong. We are growing stronger than our industry," said Ivy Chin, senior vice president of e-commerce for Belk.
