When I started my art teaching career thirteen?years ago, I had very little knowledge about the autism spectrum. It was not something that my?university prepared its graduates for at that time.
My second teaching position was with a school with a inclusion program and eight students who were all on the Autism spectrum, most of whom were non-verbal. There were very little resources for teachers at that time.
I scrambled to learn as much as I could so that I could give all my students a great art?education. It was a learning experience that changed my life.
Over the years, I became familiar with the organization Autism Speaks.?Autism Speaks was founded in 2005 by grandparents of a child with autism. It has grown to become the?world?s leading autism science and advocacy organization.
My students and I have benefited from the work that Autism Speaks have done, but the road is long and there is much to be done to help those who have autism, their caregivers, their teachers, and their families. Eighteen years ago,?possibly one in 150?children were on the Autism spectrum and now?the numbers are one in eighty-eight children.
This is a health crisis.?This election year Autism Speaks wants everyone?to ask candidates at every level, ?How will you make a difference for those living with autism??
The people in the following video have big hopes for this election year. Please give them a moment of your time and then go register with Autism Votes today.
Autism Speaks asked people with autism, parents, siblings and teachers what they hope for in this year?s election.
We encourage ALL Americans to ask candidates, ?How will you make a difference for those living with autism??
