The 7 Habits of Successfully Published Authors

The 7 Habits of Successfully Published Authors series of blog posts describes the relationship between attitudes, habits, and writing & publishing success.

The following is a series of 7 guest posts I wrote for new authors in Dan Schawbel?s Personal Branding Blog.

My goal was to highlight the habits, rather than the talents, required for writing and personal branding success.

I based the series on the more than 500 interviews I?ve conducted with successfully-published nonfiction? authors.

Topics in the series include:

  • 7 Habits of the Successfully Published Authors, Part 1: Planning. Successfully published authors plan their way to success because they view their book as an extension of their career. They view their book as their future business card.
  • 7 Habits of the Successfully Published Authors, Part 2: Discipline. Writing a book is not an impossible dream, but it requires consistent commitment and effort. They are willing to commit the time and effort because they believe in the rewards of publication.
  • 7 Habits of the Successfully Published Authors, Part 3: Efficiency. Successful authors are not ?martyrs to the cause;? they value their time and are constantly looking for ways to save time whenever possible.
  • 7 Habits of the Successfully Published Authors, Part 4: Leverage. Successfully authors recognize that advances and royalties from book sales rarely is sufficient reward for the time they invest writing their book. Accordingly, from the start, authors identify ways to leverage their books to profits from coaching, consulting, and paid speaking engagements.
  • 7 Habits of the Successfully Published Authors, Part 5: Empathy. Successful authors avoid the curse of expert knowledge. They approach their topics from their reader?s point of view. They avoid jargon (technical terms) and the temptation to provide more detail than readers need or want.
  • 7 Habits of the Successfully Published Authors, Part 6: Modelers. Successful authors avoid re-inventing the wheel; they model their success on the success of other authors. They don?t ?copy? other authors, but they learn and adapt from others in, and outside of, their field.
  • 7 Habits of the Successfully Published Authors, Part 7: Inspiration. Their writing of reflects a contagious enthusiasm and momentum that builds their reader?s confidence and encourages them to take immediate action.

What do you think?

Do you like the series? emphasis on habits and attitudes, rather than creativity and inspiration? After you?ve had a chance to review the series of 7 posts, share your comments and questions, below. Did I overlook any habits? Did the series encourage you to take a fresh look at your ability to write and publish a successful book?
