5 Eco-friendly kitchen improvements we can all afford

By Ryan Hirst | March 28, 2013 | DIY, How To's and Guides, Featured Stories, Kitchen Knowledge

A huge amount of emphasis is now on becoming more energy efficient and environmentally friendly within the home. We need to do all we can to ensure electricity bills and energy bills drop too. Having these added incentives give us a reason to improve our home.

Now the ?Green Deal? is in full flow in the United Kingdom we should be looking to improve our home in any way we can ? the kitchen is somewhere we should be doing this in. In today?s article I will give you 5 Eco-friendly kitchen improvements we can all afford, that will not only help to reduce our carbon footprint but also help decrease our bills too.

Recycling and separating waste

This technique will not actually save you any money however it won?t cost you anything either. Instead of having to install anything or change the look of your home, or even have renovations. We can all do this one, no matter where we live in the UK we will be all very familiar with the colour coded recycling bins for different waste products. Spending a little bit of time to separate your waste and dispose of it correctly will contribute to your community hitting local recycling targets and reduce the amount of waste across the county.

By simply taking the time to separate things such as cardboard, paper, waste food and all sorts of other items will contribute nationally and locally to a better environment. One good tip for reusing your waste is to create your own compost heap with your food waste; this can take around 6 months before use but is a good idea if you?re a keen gardener.

Making kitchen repairs

In the kitchen and any other part of the home, one of the main reasons for waste on energy bills is because repairs have not been made. Your homes energy bills and water bills can be higher than they need to be if you have problems such as leaks in the kitchen. This is one for the DIY lover, a good chance to save some money without spending either.

By simply getting the correct sized wrench you can adjust pipes to ensure you are not wasting any water. Another common problem can be windows not being sealed properly allowing heat to leave your home and also the cold to enter? Checking for any cracks and resealing can save money on heating bills.

You may also have waste pipes from your ovens or sinks, if so you need to ensure the holes are properly sealed for the same reasons.

Installing energy saving light bulbs

This is something that hopefully most home owners are already doing. However if you are not I cannot understand why. Do you know how much better an energy efficient light bulb is then the standard one?

In fact an energy efficient light bulb lasts as long as ten years longer and along with this also uses between 70%-75% less energy in its lifetime. So in reality we are not having to change the bulb nearly as many times, which is saving us money but we?re also ensuring that we are becoming more energy efficient in the home and the kitchen. This is something I would definitely advise you doing in the kitchen because of the amount of time being spent in it. We need to save as much money on energy bills as we possibly can.

Energy saving kitchen appliances

The kitchen is probably the most packed room in the home, filled with different appliances, using both electricity and also water. With this in mind we need to think about how we are using them. When it comes to actually replacing appliances or redesigning your kitchen look for ones with the highest possible energy efficiency rating. They are usually around the same price and will save you a lot of money in the long run, what more could you ask for?

There are many appliances you can buy that are energy efficient such as:

-????????? Washing machines

-????????? Dishwasher

-????????? Tumble drier

-????????? Ovens

-????????? Taps etc.

The way we use these appliances contributes to your carbon footprint too. In fact by simply turning your washing machine down onto a 30?C instead of its usual will help save money, think about filling the dishwasher fully before use too.

Is your home properly insulated?

The ?Green Deal? something I have wrote about on many different occasions. Something that I think is a great idea by the government, as I touched on before it is now up and running in the UK. The Green Deal allows us to make energy efficient home improvements, without having to pay it all off in one go.

Although ensuring your home is properly insulated is not just a kitchen improvement it is one that I feel I still have to mention. By properly insulating your home you could be saving as much as 10% on your energy bills annually. So why wouldn?t you want to do so? This is one of the many improvements we can have done to our home from the Green Deal and I urge you all to check it out now.

Imaging methodology reveals nano details not seen before: Understanding nanoparticles at atomic scale in 3-D could improve materials

Mar. 27, 2013 ? A team of scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Northwestern University has produced 3-D images and videos of a tiny platinum nanoparticle at atomic resolution that reveal new details of defects in nanomaterials that have not been seen before.

Prior to this work, scientists only had flat, two-dimensional images with which to view the arrangement of atoms. The new imaging methodology developed at UCLA and Northwestern will enable researchers to learn more about a material and its properties by viewing atoms from different angles and seeing how they are arranged in three dimensions.

The study will be published March 27 by the journal Nature.

The authors describe being able to see how the atoms of a platinum nanoparticle -- only 10 namometers in diameter -- are arranged in three dimensions. They also identify how the atoms are arranged around defects in the platinum nanoparticle.

Similar to how CT scans of the brain and body are done in a hospital, the scientists took images of a platinum nanoparticle from many different directions and then pieced the images together using a new method that improved the quality of the images.

This novel method is a combination of three techniques: scanning transmission electron microscopy, equally sloped tomography (EST) and three-dimensional Fourier filtering. Compared to conventional CT, the combined method produces much higher quality 3-D images and allows the direct visualization of atoms inside the platinum nanoparticle in three dimensions.

"Visualizing the arrangement of atoms in materials has played an important role in the evolution of modern science and technology," said Jianwei (John) Miao, who led the work. He is a professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA and a researcher with the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA.

"Our method allows the 3-D imaging of the local structures in materials at atomic resolution, and it is expected to find application in materials sciences, nanoscience, solid state physics and chemistry," he said.

"It turns out that there are details we can only see when we can look at materials in three dimensions," said co-author Laurence D. Marks, a professor of materials science and engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.

"We have had suspicions for a long time that there was more going on than we could see from the flat images we had," Marks said. "This work is the first demonstration that this is true at the atomic scale."

Nanotechnology expert Pulickel M. Ajayan, the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor of Engineering at Rice University complimented the research.

"This is the first instance where the three-dimensional structure of dislocations in nanoparticles has been directly revealed at atomic resolution," Ajayan said. "The elegant work demonstrates the power of electron tomography and leads to possibilities of directly correlating the structure of nanoparticles to properties, all in full 3-D view."

Defects can influence many properties of materials, and a technique for visualizing these structures at atomic resolution could lead to new insights beneficial to researchers in a wide range of fields.

"Much of what we know about how materials work, whether it is a catalyst in an automobile exhaust system or the display on a smartphone, has come from electron microscope images of how the atoms are arranged," Marks said. "This new imaging method will open up the atomic world of nanoparticles."

WADA backs HGH test against 'extremist' NFL union

LONDON (AP) ? The World Anti-Doping Agency defended its test for human growth hormone on Wednesday and accused the NFL players union of being "extremist" for questioning its validity.

WADA director general David Howman said the union was acting "the way they've operated the last few years" in trying to block the introduction of HGH testing in the National Football League.

"I would expect the players association to take a stance which is extremist," Howman told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "What we've got to do is get to reality and not to a position that is an extremist position."

The NFLPA questioned the HGH test again after Tuesday's ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the case of Estonian cross-country skier Andrus Veerpalu.

The court lifted the three-year suspension imposed by the International Ski Federation on the two-time Olympic champion for use of HGH, citing "procedural flaws" in the limits established by WADA to determine a positive test.

But the three-person CAS panel also said it believed Veerpalu did take HGH and it backed the WADA testing method as a whole.

"What we have to do is actually look at the decision in a very calculated, objective fashion," Howman said. "What CAS has decided is that the test is OK and what they want is for there to be a bigger population-based study in terms of the impact of it. We'll take that on board and we'll go further."

The NFL players said the decision highlighted its long-running concerns about HGH testing in pro football.

"For almost two years, the NFL players have fought the NFL and certain members of Congress who have publicly referred to the players' insistence on scientific validity and fairness as 'stalling' and 'posturing,'" the NFLPA said in a statement Tuesday. "Today's decision validates the players' demand for scientific validity, full due process rights, and a transparent system."

The NFL responded in a statement that it has been almost two years since an agreement was reached with the players on testing but HGH controls still have not started.

"Surprisingly, the union uses this particular decision to justify and extend into overtime its game of duck and delay," the NFL said.

The NFL and the union agreed in principle to HGH testing when a new 10-year labor agreement was finalized in August 2011. But protocols must be approved by both sides and the players have questioned the science in the testing procedures, delaying implementation.

"There is no contest as to the validity of the test," Howman said. "The test is OK. We have to make that quite strong. There's some extra work to be done. In fact, we've been doing it and we've been saying we've been doing it for the past four or five years.

"It's not a surprise to us. It's just part of what you do in the evolution of things. If there are more blood tests taken, there is more information available to us."

In a prolonged legal battle with the ski federation and WADA, Veerpalu's lawyers tried to align him with the NFLPA in contesting the HGH test.

However, CAS rejected such a link as "irrelevant to the question of the test's validity and reliability" ? and suggested the union was motivated by the labor negotiations.

Gyft opens up to developers, offers signup page for APIs

Gyft, the mobile platform that lets users buy, send and store virtual gift cards, is now giving developers a crack at its APIs. Launched late last year on Android and iOS, the service currently counts its retail partnerships in the hundreds and is looking to extend its reach to other applications, websites and, most importantly, the realm of mobile gaming. Gyft CEO Vinny Lingham, hopes mobile game devs will embrace the platform as a means of facilitating in-app purchases -- a move that would help to eliminate external charges from other billing services. Already, devs are lining up to use Gyft's APIs, with the first integration live on Yappem, a B2B social network, and "about 10 more" planned to go live next month.

'Possible more homes could be lost': Washington island landslide still a threat

Ted S. Warren / AP

A house sits near the edge of a landslide, near Coupeville, Wash., on Whidbey Island, on March 27.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

Residents of a scenic Washington state island hunkered down wherever they safely could Thursday as officials assessed damage from a huge landslide that knocked one home off its foundation and threatened dozens more.

"It's possible more homes could be lost. We're trying to ensure the safety and awareness of people,"?Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue Chief Ed?Hartin told?KOMO-TV in Seattle. "There's not anything we can do to stop the movement of the ground."?

Wednesday's landslide on the west side of Whidbey Island, near the town of Coupeville,?was about a quarter-mile wide and a half-mile deep. The early-morning landslide washed a road away, wiped out power lines and water mains, and plunged one home off the island's crumbling bluff, while threatening or cutting off access to 34 others, NBC's Miguel Almaguer reported on TODAY.

A man barely escaped his home before it tumbled down a hill in a landslide near Puget Sound on Whidbey Island in Washington state. Damage to other homes has been limited, but loose land still poses serious risks. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

No injuries were reported.

Bret Holmes, a Whidbey Island resident, lost half his backyard. He said insurance won't cover the damage.

?It makes me sick to my stomach and having to go through this, when that?s the first news I got,? he said.

Landslides are relatively common in the area, but one of this magnitude is rare. Geologists are looking into the role that rain and snow may have played, although there hasn't been significant rainfall in recent days.

Emergency crews, unable to access local roads, used Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's property to assess damage on Wednesday.?A Red Cross relief center was set up for residents up who had to evacuate.?

Residents of the island, which overlooks the Puget Sound, gathered for an emergency meeting Wednesday evening. Engineers continued assessing the safety of homes on Thursday while anxious residents awaited word.

Resident Ralph Young, who was forced to evacuate with his wife Cheryl, told NBC affiliate KING-5 in Seattle the landslide sounded like "thunder, rolling thunder."

"From down below, when you look up at the bluff, the devastation is just awful. Really just heart-wrenching,? he told KING-5.

Neighbors were assisting each other with loading furniture and clothing out of their homes, KOMO reported.

"I have no feelings whatsoever," Delia Curt?told KOMO as she hauled away belongings. "I'm totally numb."?

Coupeville is about 50 miles outside of Seattle.?The?state warns people?interested in buying shoreline property about the landslide hazards.

NBC News' Jeff Black contributed to this report.?

Newtown TV coverage, 'Girls' win Peabody Awards

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) ? A local TV station's coverage of the Connecticut school massacre, the HBO drama "Girls," and a public-service campaign about Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts' medical battle were among 39 Peabody Award winners announced Wednesday.

Recipients of the 72nd annual Peabody Awards were announced by the University of Georgia's journalism school. They were chosen by the Peabody board as the best electronic media works of 2012.

Connecticut station WVIT-TV won an award for its "quick response and comprehensive coverage" of the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Other winners for journalistic works included ABC News for its coverage of Superstorm Sandy. The network embedded a reporting team with a family in Breezy Point, N.Y., according to a description of the winning entries.

Documentaries receiving awards included "MLK: The Assassination Tapes," which aired on the Smithsonian Channel. The film was "painstakingly configured" from rare footage collected at the University of Memphis in 1968. It covers events leading up to the murder of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and its aftermath.

"Game Change," an HBO film about Sarah Palin's rise to the national political spotlight, also won a Peabody.

International winners include "Rapido y Furioso," a Univision program examining the "Fast and Furious" federal law enforcement operation targeting gun trafficking in the U.S. and Mexico. From Canada, the documentary "Under Fire: Journalists in Combat" explored the mindset of war correspondents and the dangers of their occupation.

Entertainment winners included the FX series "Louie;" TNT's "Southland" police drama; and the ABC family drama "Switched at Birth."

The entries represent "an astonishing array of outstanding media accomplishment," said Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards.

"Our list of Peabody recipients for 2012 demonstrates the range of superb work," he said. "From local to national to international, from radio to television, broadcast to cable to web, the Peabody sets the goals for every type of media production. We'll continue to do this, no matter how the world of electronic media develops."

Some of this year's winner's highlighted relatively new forms of electronic story-telling, such as the New York Times' multi-media production "Snow Fall: The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek." The online site chronicles what happened to skiers and snowboarders who were caught in an avalanche.

The 39 Peabody Awards will be formally presented at a luncheon on May 20 in New York.

Swarming robots could be the servants of the future

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Swarms of robots acting together to carry out jobs could provide new opportunities for humans to harness the power of machines.

Researchers in the Sheffield Centre for Robotics, jointly established by the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, have been working to program a group of 40 robots, and say the ability to control robot swarms could prove hugely beneficial in a range of contexts, from military to medical.

The researchers have demonstrated that the swarm can carry out simple fetching and carrying tasks, by grouping around an object and working together to push it across a surface.

The robots can also group themselves together into a single cluster after being scattered across a room, and organize themselves by order of priority.

Dr Roderich Gross, head of the Natural Robotics Lab, in the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering at the University of Sheffield, says swarming robots could have important roles to play in the future of micromedicine, as 'nanobots' are developed for non-invasive treatment of humans. On a larger scale, they could play a part in military, or search and rescue operations, acting together in areas where it would be too dangerous or impractical for humans to go. In industry too, robot swarms could be put to use, improving manufacturing processes and workplace safety.

The programming that the University of Sheffield team has developed to control the robots is deceptively simple. For example, if the robots are being asked to group together, each robot only needs to be able to work out if there is another robot in front of it. If there is, it turns on the spot; if there isn't, it moves in a wider circle until it finds one.

Dr Gross said: "We are developing Artificial Intelligence to control robots in a variety of ways. The key is to work out what is the minimum amount of information needed by the robot to accomplish its task. That's important because it means the robot may not need any memory, and possibly not even a processing unit, so this technology could work for nanoscale robots, for example in medical applications."

This research is funded by a Marie Curie European Reintegration Grant within the 7th European Community Framework Programme. Additional support has been provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Asia stocks up, Europe flat before data release

HONG KONG (AP) ? Asian stocks followed Wall Street higher on Wednesday after upbeat economic data from the world's largest economy. But in Europe, markets were unsteady ahead of the release of more indicators that would provide further clues about the health of the world's leading economies.

Reports including a forward-looking German consumer confidence index and U.S. pending home sales were expected out later in the day.

In early European trading, Germany's DAX slipped less than 0.1 percent to 7,873.17 while France's CAC 40 fell 0.1 percent to 3,743.49. The FTSE 100 index of leading British companies was practically unchanged at 6,398.29.

U.S. stocks were poised to rise marginally. Dow futures rose less than 0.1 percent to 14,484.00 while broader S&P 500 futures were up 0.1 percent to 1,558.50.

Asian stocks ended the day higher following reports overnight from the U.S. showed home prices rose in January at the fastest rate since the country's housing boom peaked in 2006 while February factory orders for long-lasting goods were at their highest in five months.

Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng index rose 0.6 percent to close at 22,464.82 while South Korea's Kospi gained 0.5 percent to 1,993.44. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index advanced 0.2 percent to 2,301.26 while the smaller Shenzhen Composite rose 0.3 percent to 955.24.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 climbed 0.9 percent to 4,995.00 while benchmarks in Taiwan, Singapore and New Zealand also rose.

"So we had a good session in the US last night, certainly. I think the durable goods order figures were really supporting to the market," said Guy Stear, head of Asia research at Societe Generale. "We continue to see strong figures really, out of the production side in the US economy."

In Japan, gains were more muted, with the Nikkei 225 edged up 0.2 percent to end at 12,493.79 as investors stay on the sidelines, hoping for more than just talk from policymakers trying to stimulate the economy. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged to pull Japan out of deflation through monetary easing and higher government spending.

"If the Abe government is going to keep the yen down, it is going to have to pull the trigger sooner rather than later, as investors are going to start calling its bluff," IG Markets strategist Evan Lucas said in a commentary.

In currencies, the dollar strengthened slightly to 94.57 yen from 94.50 yen in late trading Tuesday. The euro slipped to $1.2832 from $1.2858.

Oil prices slipped. Benchmark crude for May delivery fell 39 cents to $95.95 a barrel. The contract rose $1.53 to settle at $96.34 on the Nymex on Tuesday.

Affiliate marketing and advertising is a thing that most beginning Internet marketers use in an attempt to make cash online.? The only drawback to affiliate marketing when you first get started is that it can take you plenty of time to start bringing in any cash.? The best thing about becoming an affiliate marketer is you do not need to create any products yourself and you are not required to build a web site.? Creating and marketing your very own product would be your final option in relation to making cash online with your own online business.? Although this can be very profitable you are also going to discover that there?s a lot more work involved and it is much harder using this strategy.? The main reason for this is you can set up an affiliate program for this product and pay other folks when they generate revenue for you.

Pulitzer Prize-winner Anthony Lewis dies at 85

BOSTON (AP) ? Two-time Pulitzer winner Anthony Lewis, whose New York Times column championed liberal causes for three decades, died Monday. He was 85.

Lewis was married to Margaret Marshall, former chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. She retired in 2010 to spend more time with her husband after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. A court spokeswoman confirmed his death.

Lewis worked for 32 years as a columnist for The New York Times, taking up causes such as free speech, human rights and constitutional law.

His Pulitzers came during his years as a reporter. He won his first in 1955 for defending a Navy civilian falsely accused of being a communist sympathizer, and he won again in 1963 for reporting on the Supreme Court.

His acclaimed 1964 book, "Gideon's Trumpet," told the story of a petty thief whose fight for legal representation led to a landmark Supreme Court decision.

Lewis saw himself as a defender of decency, respect for law and reason against a tide of religious fundamentalism and extreme nationalism. His columns railed against the Vietnam War, Watergate, apartheid in South Africa and Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza.

He wrote his final "Abroad at Home" column for The Times on Dec. 15, 2001, warning against the U.S. fearfully surrendering its civil liberties in the wake of the terrorist attacks three months earlier.

"The hard question is whether our commitment to law will survive the new sense of vulnerability that is with us all after Sept. 11," he wrote. "It is easy to tolerate dissent when we feel safe."

Gail Collins, then the editorial page editor of the Times, said when Lewis resigned that he had been an inspiration.

"His fearlessness, the clarity of his writing and his commitment to human rights and civil liberties are legendary," Collins said. "And he's also one of the kindest people I have ever known."

"Gideon's Trumpet" became a legal classic, telling the story of Clarence Earl Gideon, whose case resulted in the creation of the public defender systems across the nation. In Gideon v. Wainwright, the high court ruled that criminal defendants are entitled to a lawyer even if they cannot afford one.

Gideon's victory, Lewis wrote, "shows that even the poorest and least powerful of men ? a convict with not even a friend to visit him in prison ? can take his cause to the highest court in the land and bring about a fundamental change in the law."

The best-selling book was later made into a television movie starring Henry Fonda.

Fighting for the underdog was a theme for Lewis. He won his first Pulitzer Prize at the age of 28 for a series of articles in the Washington Daily News that were judged responsible for clearing a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy from McCarthy-era allegations that he was a security risk.

Lewis said Abraham Chasanow was a middle-class man, uninterested in politics, who was terrorized by the federal loyalty-security program of the 1950s when unnamed informants alleged Chasanow was a radical communist sympathizer.

Lewis, a Cambridge resident, was a 1948 graduate of Harvard College.

US businessman gets 15 years in Dubai fraud case

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? A Dubai court has convicted an American businessman for fraud and sentenced him to 15 years' imprisonment after a nearly five-year legal battle that included a hunger strike and a failed attempt to flee.

The case against Lebanese-born Zack Shahin also brought diplomatic tensions between the United Arab Emirates and the Unites States, which backed Shahin's demand for a trial after years in detention.

Washington did not immediately comment on Monday's sentencing, which also includes fines totaling more than $7.8 million for Shahin and three others.

The Dubai criminal court found Shahin guilty of taking nearly $5.5 million in bribes as head of Dubai-based Deyaar Development. He denied wrongdoing.

Shahin staged a hunger strike before being granted bail in July 2012. He escaped to Yemen, but was returned to Dubai.

(AP) ? Three-time defending Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel held off Red Bull teammate Mark Webber in a scintillating battle to win Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Vettel, who earlier in the race complained to the team about Webber's slow pace, battled the Australian for much of the day, with the cars almost touching as the German grabbed the lead on the 46th lap for his 27th victory. The surprising run of Mercedes continued, with 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton coming in third ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg.

It was a disastrous day for Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who crashed out of the race on the second lap after damaging his front wing when he bumped Vettel a lap earlier.

Palestinians cool to partial settlement freeze

(AP) ? A senior Palestinian official rejected on Sunday the idea of a partial Israeli settlement freeze as a way of restarting peace talks, a sign of tough times ahead for the Obama administration's new attempt to bring the sides together.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met separately late Saturday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to talk about ending a deadlock of more than four years over settlements.

Abbas says he won't return to negotiations without an Israeli construction freeze, saying Israel's building on war-won land pre-empts the outcome of talks on a border between Israel and a future state of Palestine. Abbas last held talks with Netanyahu's predecessor in late 2008.

Netanyahu has refused to halt construction and instead calls for an immediate return to negotiations. President Barack Obama sided with Israel's position during a visit to the region last week, saying the Palestinians should return to talks to sort out the settlement issue.

The U.S. has not spoken publicly about possible compromises in recent days, though there has been some speculation it would propose a partial construction stop in the West Bank heartland, east of Israel's separation barrier.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Sunday that the Palestinians do not seek a confrontation with the Obama administration, but appeared to suggest that nothing short of a full freeze will bring them back to negotiations.

The Palestinians want a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, areas Israel captured in 1967. Since that war, Israel has built dozens of settlements ? considered illegal by much of the world and now home to more than half a million Israelis ? in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

Much of the construction takes place in so-called "settlement blocs" close to Israel and in east Jerusalem. Israel's separation barrier cuts off east Jerusalem and some of the settlement blocs from the rest of the West Bank.

Asked if Abbas would accept a partial freeze, east of the barrier, Erekat told Voice of Palestine radio: "Absolutely not. It is rejected."

"First of all, 90 percent of the building in settlements is going on in the blocs," he said. "If we accepted that, we would be committing two crimes. The first is legalizing what is illegal, which is settlement construction, and the second is accepting the Israeli policy (of) dictation."

Israel agreed to a 10-month slowdown in settlement construction early in Obama's first term, allowing talks to resume briefly in 2010. The talks fizzled out after Netanyahu refused to extend the slowdown, which had halted approvals for new homes but allowed previously started construction to continue.

Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who will oversee any negotiations with the Palestinians, said it remained to be seen what would bring about a new round of talks.

"We are after four years of stalemate, of distrust, and we need to see how we restart, what we will discuss," she told Army Radio.

Erekat said the Palestinians would wait for two to three months to see if the Obama administration can come up with a way out of the deadlock. "We want to cooperate with the U.S. administration, not clash with it," he said.

If the deadlock persists, the Palestinians will move ahead with their quest for international recognition, he said. "We have to focus on the steadfastness of our people, and we have 63 international agencies we can join," he said.

In November, the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly recognized a state of Palestine in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, despite objections by the U.S. and Israel. The recognition paved the way for Palestinians to seek membership in U.N. agencies and other international organizations.

Earlier Sunday, Israel dismantled a tent camp Palestinians set up during Obama's recent visit to protest Israeli plans to build a large West Bank settlement near Jerusalem.

During his visit, Obama singled out the settlement, known by its planning name E-1, as particularly problematic. The settlement of more 3,500 apartments would close one of the last open spaces between east Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Before dawn Sunday, about 200 Israeli police officers removed some 40 demonstrators from the tent camp, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. Three protesters were arrested, but no injuries were reported, Rosenfeld said.

The encampment is part of a new Palestinian tactic to protest against Israeli settlement expansion.

Zotac Zbox ID83 Plus

The Zotac Zbox ID83 Plus ($472.99 list) is a reasonably priced small-form-factor desktop that packs a decent punch into its compact chassis. With a third-generation Intel "Ivy Bridge" processor, generous port selection, and support for dual-display output, it has the chops to go beyond its intended media-consumption purposes, in turn allowing users to dabble in some media creation as well as daily computing tasks. These attributes, alongside its sub-$500 sticker price, help overshadow its shortcomings, like the absence of an operating system or bundled peripherals, and make it a viable way to rev up any home theatre.

Design and Features
The Zbox ID83 Plus measures 7.4 by 1.7 by 7.4 inches (HWD), making it smaller than the Acer Aspire AX1930-UR10P but roughly on par with the compact Giada i53 Mini PC. With a silver strip lining the outer edges of its otherwise all-black body, its two-tone finish makes for an appealingly simple design. Although the glossy black portion invariably attracts fingerprints, chances are you won't be touching the system very often, since it will likely be nestled behind your TV or monitor. Given its tiny size and quiet fan operation, there's even a good chance that you'll forget it's there. A circular blue LED on the side of the chassis provides a cool visual effect, while the opposite side of the chassis sports four rubber feet to provide a grip for horizontal positioning. Alternatively, the system ships with a stand for vertical orientation as well as a VESA monitor mount.

The Zbox ID83 Plus crams an impressive number of ports onto its limited surface area. The front panel houses headphone and microphone jacks, a 6-in-1 card reader, and a USB 2.0 port. Another USB 2.0 port can be found on the top of the system, while the rear features a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a pair of USB 3.0 ports (marked in blue to prevent confusion), an Ethernet port, an optical S/PDIF (5.1 digital audio) port, and HDMI and DVI outputs. The latter two outputs allow for two displays to be used simultaneously. Additionally, the rear sports a screw-in jack for the bundled antenna, which helps strengthen the Zbox ID83's 802.11n/g/b Wi-Fi signal. The Zbox ID83 Plus also sports Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, so users can pair it with a wireless keyboard or mouse without having to deal with wires or with dongles. Although it does come with a remote that can navigate through your preferred media-playback interface, users must nevertheless separately purchase peripherals.

Opening the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus's chassis consists of removing a pair of thumbscrews on the bottom panel and popping off the side of the chassis, revealing some room for upgrades. Our test unit's single DIMM socket was occupied by a 4GB memory module, which can be replaced with a stick as large as 16GB. The included 500GB, 5,400rpm HDD, moreover, can be swapped with a more capacious 2.5-inch HDD or a solid-state-drive (SSD).

The Zbox ID83 Plus's 500GB 5,400rpm hard drive doesn't come with any bloatware. That's mostly due to the fact that it doesn't ship with an operating system, so users must spring extra cash for Windows 7 or 8 (we installed Windows 7 on our test unit). Moreover, since the system doesn't have an optical drive like the Lenovo H520s, installing the OS may entail the additional expense of an external optical drive.

Performance
Zotac Zbox ID83 Plus

With its 2.5GHz Intel Core i3-3120M CPU and 4GB RAM, the Zbox ID83 Plus packs a decent punch beneath its trim chassis. Its PCMark 7 score of 1,855 points fell behind the rest of its peers, like the Editors' Choice-winning Gateway SX2380-UR318 (2,056 points) and, to a greater extent, the Giada i53 Mini PC (4.337 points). Nevertheless, the Zbox ID83 Plus's Cinebench R11.5 score of 2.52 points managed to outmaneuver the the Gateway SX2380-UR318 (1.50 points) and the Giada i53 Mini PC (1.50 points) while falling short of the Aspire AX1930-UR10P (3.50 points) and the class-leading Lenovo H520s (4.90 points).

Although geared primarily toward media consumption, the Zbox ID83 Plus also displayed some finesse for moderate levels of media creation. It finished our Handbrake video-encoding test in 1 minute 26 seconds, edging past the i53 Mini PC by three seconds (1:26) and the Gateway SX2380-UR318 (2:25) by over a minute. Moreover, its performance in our Photoshop CS6 test (6:39) outflanked the Gateway SX2380-UR318 (7:26) while landing behind that of the i53 Mini PC (6:39) by a fairly sizable margin. Similarly, it exhibited some surefootedness for 3D rendering, with ascore of 1,118 points in 3DMark11, which came close to the class-leading Gateway SX2380-UR318 (1,170 points) while trumping the Giada i53 Mini PC (979 points).

Zotac Zbox ID83 Plus

The Zbox ID83 Plus's integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU isn't geared towards high-end gaming, so it unsurprisingly couldn't crack the 30 frames per second (fps) playability barrier in either our Heaven or Aliens vs. Predator benchmark tests.

With its third-generation Intel "Ivy Bridge" processor, generous port selection, and support for dual-display output, the Zotac Zbox ID83 Plus has the capacity to go beyond its intended media consumption purposes. Although this helps overshadow its shortcomings, it's not enough to bump the Gateway SX2380-UR318 off its perch as our current Editors' Choice. If you're a patient person who doesn't mind separately acquiring an OS and peripherals, though, it's a good way to rev up your home entertainment center.

Biden: 'No Leadership' in GOP

Vice President Joe Biden said today the Republican Party is struggling with an identity crisis, with "no leadership" and "the tail wagging the dog."

"There is no leadership," he told donors for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City, according to the pool report. "There is nobody you can sit across the table from and shake hands, make a deal with.

"The problem is we have the tail wagging the dog in the Republican Party," he added.

Biden led negotiations with Republican leaders in Congress in what resulted in the fiscal cliff deal earlier this year. While he did not cite the specific negotiations, the vice president said that in at least five instances, House Republicans took back an offer they had agreed to, calling Biden to say, "What we agreed to Joe, we can't do."

"The reason this is so dysfunctional now - with whom do you make a deal? With whom do you speak to get something done?" he said.

But Biden had kind words for one Republican senator, Rand Paul, calling him "a fine man, he's a decent man." When talking about Rep. Paul Ryan, his former opponent in 2012, the vice president got laughs from the crowd, saying "The Ryan budget is absolutely - the Ryan budget."

The vice president thanked the crowd of 250 people at the DCCC conference for supporting him and other Democratic candidates in recent years.

"When I first ran, you just hoped that I'd turn out the right way," he joked, adding that "some of you may still not be [convinced]."

And the vice president made light of his now infamous moment where a hot mic caught him calling President Obama's healthcare plan a "big f***ing deal."

"Thank God my mom's not alive - can't trust those microphones," he joked.

Hey Guys!

Shopping at the city?center?or running errands around your local town lately? While doing these regular chores, if you look closely, you will find huge changes taken place over the recent years.I?m living in Northern Province Vavuniya City, but No matter where you live, I think the little guys- the small stores, independent business owners are all disappearing. At least in my local town, majority of them can?t be found anymore. Most of the local small families running stores offering the homely personal touch are now being all swallowed up by the latest market dominants, the supermarkets and the chain stores which sell almost anything and everything you may need for the day to day life.

It is a really depressing and pathetic scene where numerous out of town retail parks and supermarkets are uprooting the locals and taking their places. Virtually, each major town or city is basically a carbon copy of one other. Anywhere you travel; there is not much diversity or change you can find anymore. In every city or town, it?s the usual brand of coffee shops, all the same cloth stores, the usual chains of garden care companies, DIY or the same restaurants or electrical outlets. These small businesses owners are struggling to survive a losing battle and are loosing their lifeblood as it is being sucked out.

Your Online Income Generation Machine ? ?Your Website

mbp Local Businesses Becoming Online Giants Useful Tips

You don?t have to create an expensive website with all singing and dancing works of art. The site should be updated regularly and be search engine friendly.Designing a fully functional and yet profitable website is an extremely daunting task. So, small businesses owners usually leave all the designing and technical works to the hired contractors. This sometimes turns out to be an expensive mistake. Website designers are capable of making stunning looking website designs complete using every bell and whistle.

For example, if you were running a car dealership, you would not trust the car mechanics to run your marketing campaigns. He ?may be a damn good car mechanic, but it is almost unlikely that the mechanic would also be an expert authority on marketing. Hand the control of the marketing campaigns over to him and pretty soon you?ll be out of business.Allowing your website designer to run the website for you would put you into similar situations as mentioned above.

Of course, they come with excellent design skills, but they are not experts on marketing in most cases. Only a few website designers completely understand the effective search engine optimization techniques, or how to present compelling sales information or advertisements which effectively pre-sells the products and services you intend to put on the shelves.Believe me; nobody wants a website designer who only focuses on eye catching designs with pretty looking but absolutely pointless gimmicks providing Zero efficiency.Below some tips are presented that will help you run your website with total control and eventually you?ll be running a website providing a healthy profit.

1.? Think straight and be sure about what it is that you really want. You want and need a website working 24/7 with regular earnings. Be clear about exactly what task each web page is expected to accomplish and design them accordingly. Also, in advance, decide what kind of customers your website is trying to attract.

  1. For example, are you interested in showing off your products via an online brochure or do you want to sell those on the website?
  2. ?Do you want the webpage to collect the visitor?s contact details or just want the site to let the consumers know your contact details? To keep the customers updated you can go for a blog or newsletter delivery.

2.? Place your offers and make the Buy and contact details clearly visible on the website.? People buy online to save time. So, if you want more online buyers, make the Buy button clearly seen. Make sure that your contact details are visible bright and clearly on each web page, so, the customers can call you if needed.
