Peru school budget means some jobs lost if approved

The Peru Central School District's board unanimously approved a budget that now needs approval from voters.

The budget is just over $40.9 million.? Compared to last year it's an increase of just over one percent.

Peru Central School District Superintendent Patrick Brimstein said they must stop digging into reserves or funds, which could be depleted in a couple of years if they don't.? So they had to find a way to cuts costs. ?

??? ?

Just under 20 jobs will cut, but he says 16 will come through attrition.

??? ?

The superintendent says board meetings and budget meetings have been well attended, and says good ideas have come from them.? However, between retirement, health care, benefits and other costs that are increasing, sometimes by double digits, cuts were inevitable.

"If you were to transport all those costs onto the taxpayer it would be a number that nobody could support, and we recognize that.? So we try to very critically and analytically look at our program to look at where it was that we could make savings," said Brimstein. ?

He says this coming budget year schools will feel the pinch, but he says the move will put the district in better financial shape, reducing budget gaps to come.

As for taxes, if the budget is approved there would be a 3.9 percent increase in the tax levy.

??? ?

The public votes on the budget Tuesday, May 21.
