is also no surprise that the?urban areas with the largest drops in home prices from the 2006 peak, coupled with high unemployment, have the largest percentage of total home inventory in foreclosure. In Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL the number is 12.4%. In Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, FL, the figure is 12.3%. The numbers from state to state continue to be driven in part by the manner in which?foreclosures go through the legal system. In states in which the process is extremely fast, a larger number of the?foreclosed home have been processed.

The amount of data on the housing market remains varied and confused. Yesterday?s Case-Shiller?data showed Atlanta as the most troubled?market with home prices down 17.4%? year over year in March. Corelogic?reports that Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA has 2.7% of inventory in foreclosure?a relatively low number. A Little Home with Freesias: My parenting dilemma

I have been debating whether to publish this post or not. It is a bit personal.
I say it every time, I know. I really don't want to make this blog about parenting or mothering but occasionally the topic just comes up. I guess I am reluctant to talk too much about it, just in case I bore you!
The past few months have been so busy in our household. The little man has been experiencing what seems like constant illness and that combined with?shift work, motherhood and?contributing to the running of our household,?is?fast becoming?too hard. I so wanted to seem like the super mum who could work 5 days a fortnight (mostly night shifts - 10 hours nights shifts mind you!), capably care for?her family and have a neat, tidy, organised home, but I am not. No, unfortunately I am not a robot. It would seem that working and caring for a one year old, at least for me, is not quite that easy after all. I have felt like time is just passing us by. The little man is growing up before our very eyes. I can't believe it is nearly June!?Seriously, how did that happen?
So, after much deliberation and a few tears, I have decided to reduce my shifts to two shifts per week and I am also pulling the little man out of childcare. Fingers crossed this will all come together in a month or so.?I figure we can try childcare again next year and in the meantime, the little man's immune system can take a break from overdrive. It is time to get my little family back on track!?Some decisions as a parent are so?difficult and I have struggled with this one, but hopefully this?decision will provide us with?the opportunity to regroup and be as well as possible for the remainder of the year.

I love this photo for obvious?reasons - even if it does accentuate my big nose! Look at my beautiful little boy - good enough to eat he is!

Napa incubator approaches funding goal, nonprofit status ? North ...

NAPA COUNTY ? Efforts to establish an incubator for startups producing high-tech, high-paying jobs in Napa County have taken a step forward with a combined $25,000 contribution from the county and city of Napa, pushing the project closer to reaching an early funding threshold of $38,000.

That initial round of funding will help afford a feasibility study, a comprehensive business plan and the establishing of nonprofit status for the ?Trellis,? a program known officially as the Napa County Business Incubator and expected to take up residence in the facility that formerly housed a Japan Airlines training program at the Napa County Airport.

The American Canyon City Council is expected to vote in June on whether or not to match the funding allocated by the city of Napa ? an initial $5,000, with $5,000 allocated in the next fiscal year pending positive findings in the feasibility study.

Napa?s council voted unanimously to approve the funding this month, mirroring universal support seen in the county Board of Supervisors. If American Canyon follows suit, the group spearheading the project will be only $3,000 shy of its initial goal, said incubator board of directors President Paul Hicks.

?The public investment right now is really important to lay the foundation,? said Mr. Hicks, a member of the Napa Chamber of Commerce?s Executive Committee who has long considered launching an incubator program.

Funding from the city of Napa came through the city?s Community Development Department, with the county?s $15,000 lump sum sourced through the Napa-Lake Workforce Investment Board.

Mr. Hicks said that the group will be filing for nonprofit status as soon as the funding is received, a move that he said will help to source further contributions to the project.

The group will work with Menlo Park?s Business Cluster Development in the creation of a business plan, a consultancy that has helped launch more than 60 incubator programs including the Sonoma Mountain Business Cluster, said Jeri Gill, vice president of the incubator board and CEO of Sustainable Napa County.

The incubator would be a Napa foray in the state-designated ?innovation hub? regional economic development collaboration that includes Sonoma, Napa and Marin Counties.

?Having an incubator gives us an opportunity to put out a welcome mat,? said Napa city Mayor Jill Techel, noting other business-friendly developments in the region like the adoption of the city?s sweeping Downtown Specific Plan. ?Yes we?re ag, yes we love our grapes, we love our wine, but a diverse economy is a good thing.?

While the final cost of the incubator proposal is pending the result of the feasibility study, a letter presented to the region?s governments notes that similar projects have cost approximately $300,000 over the course of the initial three years of operation. Mr. Hicks said that he expects the project to be self sufficient in its fourth year, deriving income through tenant occupancy and program revenue.

The final cost of the program could be partially mitigated by a number of factors, including the fact that the building?s landlord ? the county of Napa ? could agree to offer a reduced rent on the site. Mr. Hicks, said that discussions of a rental arrangement are ongoing, and that further cost reductions could come through the favorable layout that remained after the exit of the building?s previous tenant.

Mr. Hicks said that he could see the facility hosting its first tenants later this year.

Goals for the program include fostering 100 startups in the first ten years, companies that ultimately occupy the region?s commercial vacancies and employ 1,500 workers at an average pay of $50 an hour.

Director Kevin MacDonald and co-producer Ziggy Marley bring forth the most definitive look back at the life of Bob Marley, in the new documentary "Marley". From the formation of "The Wailers" and the comings and goings of different members of the band (including Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff), to Marley's dealings in Rastafarian and how it bled into his Reggae music; and also from his controversial lifestyle punctuated by being a "womanizer" (eleven children from seven different women) to his humanitarian nature, this in-depth (two and a half hour) documentary will immensely satisfy fan and novice alike. I, like many other younger American non-Rasta's, had grown up knowing Bob Marley for his more commercially catchy hits and from his countless depictions on a multitude of shirts worn by numerous Bay Area potheads. But, being a novice, going into this film I wasn't particularly interested in seeing a two and a half hour movie about the life and times Bob Marley. A story I thought I knew, and had heard, countless times before. But that notion changed rather abruptly within the first few minutes of this movie. And by the end, due to the brilliant investigative journalistic nature of MacDonald which elevates "Marley" from an average movie to a MUST SEE documentary, audiences who see this film will walk out with an in-depth appreciation for the man who wrote some of the most poetic and revolutionary lyrics in music history. "Marley" is the no holds barred dissection of a particular subject (or subject matter) which fans of great documentaries will crave (and in fact, was nowhere to be found in the films of 2011). And for a documentary that was originally supposed to be directed by Martin Scorsese, after seeing what MacDonald has accomplished here, it would be hard to imagine "Marley" being more perfectly executed in anybody else's hands. What truly sets "Marley" apart from other bio-documentaries and A&E specials is how, in a very PBS way, MacDonald uses a seemingly endless amount of archival footage, as well as interviews with almost everybody (still alive) who had anything to do with Marley's upbringing and his life as a world famous musician, as the narration. It was quite apparent that MacDonald had full access to any and all information he wanted, and as far as I could see, he thankfully took complete advantage of this fact. As audiences, we hear from Marley's family and peers about how as a young boy he was an outcast because of his mixed-race. We also hear from notable Jamaican artists and record executives, who saw his maturation into a musician that worked to bridge the gaps, not only in Jamaica (during times of war) but nationwide as well. In this way, MacDonald enables audiences to intimately know Bob Marley on every level (get your mind out of the gutter). But all the pure information aside, what MacDonald does very well here is not creating a documentary which totally sanctifies Bob Marley, much as many movies (tributes) do when celebrities with checkered pasts die. MacDonald captures recollections of Marley from both those who loved the man and those who thought him to be nothing more than a womanizing zealot, who was sadly not as politically motivated as he should have been. Final Thought: Overall "Marley" is a brilliant example of an archetype onto how all biographical documentaries should be made. Grade "A" filmmaking, in conjunction with a larger than life subject (subject matter) is what elevates "Marley" into one of the most entertaining two and a half hour documentaries I have ever seen. If you are at all a Bob Marley fan (casual or otherwise) and if you are able to, see "Marley", any way you can, before Hollywood makes a more commercialized (legacy ruining) feature film version of his life in a few years; starring Mekhi Phifer no doubt. ?? It was founded in 2000 by Mary Kamau. She had a dream of building a school in the largest slum in Africa, the Mathare Valley. It is three miles long and one- half mile wide and houses over one million people. There is no sewer and no running water.
?Until? you have witnessed this kind of poverty firsthand,? you simply cannot imagine it. No words describe it.? But there is hope.... The school started with 50 children and has grown to more than 7,000.

New research examining parabens found in cancerous human breast tissue points the finger at antiperspirants and other cosmetics for increasing your risk of breast cancerⁱ.

The research, which is also reviewed in an editorial published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, looked at where breast tumors were appearing, and determined that higher concentrations of parabens were found in the upper quadrants of the breast and axillary area, where antiperspirants are usually appliedⁱⁱ.

Parabens are chemicals that serve as preservatives in antiperspirants and many cosmetics, as well as sun lotions. Previous studies have shown that all parabens have estrogenic activity in human breast cancer cells.

Another component of antiperspirants, aluminum chloride, has been found to act similarly to the way oncogenes work to provide molecular transformations in cancer cells. According to the authors of the editorial review, the research shows ?signals of concern that such compounds are not as safe as previously generally considered, and further research is warranted.? Furthermore:

?The data from this latest study, the most extensive examination of parabens in human breast so far published, confirms previous work and raises a number of questions on the entire parabens, personal care product and human health debate, particularly relating to the source and toxicological significance of the paraben esters.?

Ninety-nine Percent of Breast Cancer Tissue Samples Contain Parabens

The featured study by Barr et.al. discovered one or more paraben esters in 99 percent of the 160 tissue samples collected from 40 mastectomiesⁱⁱⁱ. In 60 percent of the samples, all five paraben esters were present. There were no correlations between paraben concentrations and age, length of breast feeding, tumor location, or tumor estrogen receptor content. The median values in nanograms per tissue for the five chemicals were:

1. n-propylparaben 16.8
2. methylparaben 16.6
3. n-butylparaben 5.8
4. ethylparaben 3.4
5. isobutylparaben 2.1

While antiperspirants are a common source of parabens, the authors note that the source of the parabens cannot be established, and that 7 of the 40 patients reportedly never used deodorants or antiperspirants in their lifetime. What this tells us is that parabens, regardless of the source, can bioaccumulate in breast tissue.

And the sources are many. Parabens can be found in a wide variety of personal care products, cosmetics, as well as drugs. That said, it appears the dermal route is the most significant form of exposure. In the featured editorial, Philip Harvey and David Everett explain why:

Safety of Parabens has NEVER Been Established?

The Estrogenic Activity of Parabens

Estrogens, whether synthetic or natural are a primary risk factor for breast cancer. Approximately 20 different studies have established that parabens have estrogenic activity, which makes them relevant when it comes to estrogen-sensitive cancers. A common excuse used to defend the absence of toxicological studies is that parabens are weak in terms of potency. For example, propylparaben and butylparaben are approximately 30,000 and 10,000 less potent than estradiol, respectively.

?However, estradiol occurs in breast tissue in the pictogram per gram of tissue range? but the results reported by Barr et.al. [the featured study] show tissue concentrations of parabens, in the worst cases, in the microgram per gram of breast tissue range, which is one million-fold higher than that of estradiol. Clearly, the magnitude of exposure would seem to more than compensate for the reduction in potency,? Harvey and Everett write.

But that?s not all. A 2011 study reported that methylparaben promotes cell cycling and makes human breast cells more resistant to apoptosis, which, according to the authors can provide the molecular basis for malignant tumor proliferation. Harvey and Everett also cite another study from 2007, which found that propylparaben and butylparaben cause detectable DNA damage.

Rise in Breast Cancer Likely Linked to Chemical Exposures

Harvey and Everett point out that the hypothesis that chemicals in personal care products might be harmful to your health and contribute to breast cancer has a basis in two key observations:

1. Breast cancer rates have increased in recent decades, which correlates with many lifestyle factors that have undergone significant change during that same time, such as diet, obesity, and use of personal care products containing untested chemicals
2. Tumors are disproportionately located in the upper, outer quadrant of the breast, and more tumors are found in the left breast than the right, suggesting it may be related to products applied topically to those areas (most people are right-handed, which could make you a bit more heavy-handed when applying products under your left arm than your right)

In my view, one of the key observations by Harvey and Everett is that:

?The tenet that there ?is no evidence that personal care products (antiperspirants or deodorants) are related to breast cancer? is technically correct, but only because studies have not been conducted to investigate any relationships. Such arguments provide false assurance by masking the inadequacies of empirical evidence and knowledge.?

Aluminum?Another Cancer-Promoting Ingredient in Antiperspirants

Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, or blocking the pores that release sweat under your arms?with the active ingredient being aluminum. (If you are using a deodorant-only product it is unlikely to contain aluminum but might contain other chemicals that could be a concern, such as parabens.) Not only does this block one of your body?s routes for detoxification (releasing toxins via your underarm sweat), but it raises concerns about where these metals are going once you roll them (or spray them) on.

Like parabens, aluminum salts can also mimic estrogen, and, just like the featured study, previous research has shown that aluminum is also absorbed and deposited into breast tissue^iv. The researchers suggested raised levels of aluminum could even be used as a biomarker for identification of women at increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Aluminum salts can account for 25 percent of the volume of some antiperspirants, and a review of the common sources of aluminum exposure for humans found that antiperspirant use can significantly increase the amount of aluminum absorbed by your body. According to the review, after a single underarm application of antiperspirant, about .012 percent of the aluminum may be absorbed^v. This may not sound like much until you multiply it by one or more times a day for a lifetime, which adds up to massive exposure to aluminum?a poison that is not supposed to be in your body, and may be more toxic than mercury. Aside from vaccinations, your antiperspirant may be your largest source of exposure to this poisonous metal!

Be Cautious with Natural Deodorants, Too

There are many brands of chemical-free, aluminum-free deodorants on the market, and many of these are safe alternatives. ?Crystal? deodorant stones, which are a popular natural deodorant alternative often used by health-conscious shoppers looking to avoid aluminum, often claim to be aluminum-free, but some actually contain a different type of compound known as an alum, the most common form being potassium alum, also known as potassium aluminum sulfate.

Potassium Alum or Ammonium Alum are natural mineral salts made up of molecules that are too large to be absorbed by your skin. They form a protective layer on your skin that inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria. These deodorants are recommended by many cancer treatment centers, but while this may be a better alternative to most antiperspirants and deodorants on the market, it is not completely aluminum-free. Also remember to check the remaining ingredients, keeping a watchful eye out for parabens.

For the last?few decades?I have not used antiperspirants or deodorants?even natural ones. I noticed that they would cause a yellow stain in the armpit of my shirts. At first I thought the stain was due to my sweat but I quickly realized it was the chemicals in the antiperspirants. I routinely substitute soap and water in my armpits and that seems to work. Although last year I noticed that if I sunbathe my axilla regularly, the UV light actually sterilized my armpits in addition to raising my levels of vitamin D. There is no odor even without using soap and water. Essentially you tan your armpits. The effect is not long lasting and the bacteria repopulate in a day or so unless you?expose your armpits to sunlight.

What Can You Do to Prevent Breast Cancer?

Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among U.S. women. Unfortunately, while the American Cancer Society widely encourages women to get mammograms, they do not do nearly enough to spread the word about the many ways women can help prevent breast cancer in the first place. The following lifestyle strategies will help to lower your risk of breast cancer:

• Radically reduce your sugar/fructose intake. Normalizing your insulin levels by avoiding sugar and fructose is one of the most powerful physical actions you can take to lower your risk of cancer. Unfortunately, very few oncologists appreciate or apply this knowledge today. The Cancer Centers of America is one of the few exceptions, where strict dietary measures are included in their cancer treatment program. Fructose is especially dangerous, as research shows it actually speeds up cancer growth.
• Optimize your vitamin D level. Ideally it should be over 50 ng/ml, but levels from 70-100 ng/ml will radically reduce your cancer risk. Safe sun exposure is the most effective way to increase your levels, followed by safe tanning beds and then oral vitamin D3 supplementation as a last resort if no other option is available.
• Maintain a healthy body weight. This will come naturally when you begin eating right for your nutritional type and exercising using high-intensity burst-type activities, which are part of my Peak Fitness program. It?s important to lose excess weight because estrogen is produced in fat tissue.
• Get plenty of high quality animal-based omega-3 fats, such as those from krill oil. Omega-3 deficiency is a common underlying factor for cancer.
• Avoid drinking alcohol, or limit your drinks to one a day for women.
• Breastfeed exclusively for up to six months. Research shows this will reduce your breast cancer risk.
• Watch out for excessive iron levels. This is actually very common once women stop menstruating. The extra iron actually works as a powerful oxidant, increasing free radicals and raising your risk of cancer. So if you are a post-menopausal woman or have breast cancer you will certainly want to have your Ferritin level drawn. Ferritin is the iron transport protein and should not be above 80. If it is elevated you can simply donate your blood to reduce it.

The Knoxville School Board reached contract agreements last week with two union groups. Superintendent Dr. Randy Flack says that the board agreed to a contract with the Knoxville Education Association that will raise wages next year by about 3.6%, which is right about at the state average. Dr. Flack says that next year, their wages will increase by around 2.6%.
