Ten Backpacking Tips for Your Next Trip

Preparing for a Backpacking Trip

Like all vacations that require some kind of planning, unless you are going forth on a wing and a prayer and completely improving a trip, a backpacking trip might mean planning at a military level. Even for seasoned backpackers, a backpacking trip is something to look forward to but not take lightly.

Unless you can remember everything in your head and not forget the smallest of details, it is wise to write down a list of things that need to be performed and attained as you prepare for your backpacking adventure. With computers and smart phones, it is easy to track and check off what you still need to do as you prepare by creating a list that is easily accessible.

The following will help you remember the instrumental items and things you must do to prepare for your backpacking trip:

1) Be open to new backpacking experiences. If there is an area that you?ve wanted to backpack in then research and see if it is a location that interests you to make a decision to go.

2) Make sure you have a traveling partner. It is never wise to go alone unless you have Daniel Boone?s skills.

3) Know your skills and abilities and make a call to rangers and others in a certain area that you want to hike to check conditions there.

4) A good gear list is next. Your list will be dependent on the conditions, season, and type of weather your area is experiencing. This will include a cell phone (even satellite phones for those who plan on backpacking nowhere near a cell tower), sunglasses, hiking boots, chewing gum, duct tape, pepper spray, a stun gun, sun block, a lighter/matches, and a flashlight with extra batteries.

5) Clothing (depending on time of year you backpack), hiking shorts and pants, and water proof boots, shoes for the camp, wool- and liner socks, water proof jackets, hats, synthetic t-shirts, bra?s and underwear, fleece sweater, and long johns.

6) Your Kitchen should include a stove, fuel, pots and pan, plates and silverware, pot grabbers, cups, a couple of dish towels and napkins, and food and drink! There even special containers you can purchase to keep your food bear proof. This adds to the safety of your group as well.

7) Tent ? Sleeping under the stars on an amazing backpacking adventure should be attempted when possible, but for safety, health and comfort, a tent with sleeping back is the way to go. Make sure you have all of your accessories, including tent poles, before you leave.

8) A survival kit is essential to anyone going on a backpacking trip to Alaska or anywhere else. It should include a signaling device, a mirror, safety matches, a fire extinguisher, and a space blanket.

9) A first aid kit should include aspirin, ibuprofen, antibiotic ointment, band aids, bandanas? and ACE bandages, tweezers, safety pins, and wound closing strips.

10) Something fun ? bring along a book, a harmonica, an iPod, a deck of cards, anything personal to add the level of enjoyment you hope to have on your backpacking trip.

When preparing for a backpacking trip to Alaska, or any of our other 49 states, make sure to follow these basics and you will be off to a great start!
